The text includes publication/library information, a cast list, and production context, including premiere and subsequent performances in Dublin and London. It presents a one-evening setting at the Beavis home in Dublin, where questions of sanity, missing guests, and responsibility drive a blend of detection, comedy, thriller elements, tragedy, allegory, and black farce. It also explains interpretive methods, symbolism, character “poker” behavior, and a controversial ending.",{"@graph":14,"@context":72},[15,34,55],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/","Story scriptrather than at the beginning.Certainly, the reader who is not alreadyfamiliar with The Poker Session is advised to read the play first andthese notes afterwards:that is,unless he is the kind of person who likesto know\"whodunnit\"before reading a detective story. It is,of course, the essential function of a production note that not only must it let thecat out of the bag,but that the animal should be vivisected in theprocess! \nThe Poker Session is not only a play of detection:it contains also theelements of a comedy,a thriller,a tragedy,an allegory and a black farce. It is for the intending producer to decide upon his own interpretation—to find his own “through line”,as it were.On the surface, the playseems to be completely naturalistic:the story of a young man who isspending his first evening at home after a year in a mental institution. Its basic appeal to an audience stems from the several questions it poses:such questions as'Is Billy now sane?”\"Why has Des,the missing guest, failed to show up?\"and,most important of all,“Who drove Billy into theasylum?\" \nBut the play's apparent simplicity may prove deceptive. The PokerSession may be understood (and misunderstood)on a number of more\"subterranean\"levels.To give one example:although we sce pokerbeing played hardly at all in the course of the action, the play has nonethe less been written so that it resembles a rather hectic game of whatTeddy calls “stand-up poker”.Each character behaves towards the othersin the same way as he or she would behave during an actual poker game.Billy, for example,is cautious:he conceals his cards carefully,\"check-ing”for most of the time, until he finally calls the others and shows hiscards.Kevin,on the other hand,is the perpetual bluffer who wins(for most of the time)by brute force, but in the long run is alwaysbeaten.Irene is irresponsible:she plays without thinking of what cardsthe others may be holding, and without regard for the consequences ofher thoughtlessness.Fran is a born loser:she simply likes to play cards, but for minimalstakes andis easilybrowbeatenintothrowinginher cards. \nThe intending producer will discover, however, that if he attends tothe realities of the play, the symbolism will take care of itself. His maindifficulty will be to balance the play's contrasting moods. He must mixhis colours so that the final landscape
