He went to Trinity College, Dublin, and then to Magdalen College, Oxford, where he began to propagandize the new Aesthetic (or ‘Art for Art’s Sake’) Movement. Despite gaining a first and winning the Newdigate Prize for Poetry, Wilde failed to obtain an Oxford scholarship, and was forced to earn a living by lecturing and writing for periodicals. He published a largely unsuccessful volume of poems in 􀀒􀀓􀀓􀀒 and in the next year undertook a lecture tour of the United States in order to promote the D’Oyly Carte production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera, Patience. After his marriage to Constance Lloyd in 􀀒􀀓􀀓􀀕, he tried to establish himself as a writer, but with little initial success. However, his three volumes of short fiction, The Happy Prince (􀀒􀀓􀀓􀀓), Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime (􀀒􀀓􀀖􀀒) and A House of Pomegranates (􀀒􀀓􀀖􀀒), together with his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (􀀒􀀓􀀖􀀒), gradually won him a reputation confirmed and enhanced by the phenomenal success of his society comedies – Lady Windermere’s Fan, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest, all performed on the West End stage between 􀀒􀀓􀀖􀀗 and 􀀒􀀓􀀖􀀔 . \nSuccess, however, was short-lived. In 􀀒􀀓􀀖􀀒 Wilde had met and fallen extravagantly in love with Lord Alfred Douglas. In 􀀒􀀓􀀖􀀔, when his success as a dramatist was at its height, Wilde brought an unsuccessful libel action against Douglas’s father, the Marquess of Queensberry. Wilde lost the case and two trials later was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for acts of gross indecency. As a result of this experience he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol. He was released from prison in 􀀒􀀓􀀖􀀘 and went into an immediate self-imposed exile on the Continent. He died in Paris in ignominy in 􀀒􀀖􀀙􀀙 . \n􀀌􀀋􀀚􀀂􀀌􀀏 􀀛􀀆􀀄􀀎􀀉􀀈􀀈 completed a Ph.D. on Gothic fiction and Victorian medico-legal science at the University of Wales, and then spent three years as a post-doctoral fellow at Merton College, University of Oxford. In 􀀒􀀖􀀖􀀘 he became the editor of Penguin Classics; he now works asa freelance writer, journalist and editor. His publications include an \nedition of Oscar Wilde’s poems for Everyman Paperbacks, and a study of Victorian Gothic fiction for Oxford University Press (􀀒􀀖􀀖􀀖) . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He lives in London. \n􀀋􀀊􀀇􀀉􀀌 􀀐􀀆􀀈􀀑􀀂 \nThe Picture of Dorian Gray \nEdited with an Introduction and Notes by 􀀌􀀋􀀚􀀂􀀌􀀏 􀀛􀀆􀀄􀀎􀀉􀀈􀀈 \n􀀁􀀂􀀃􀀄􀀅􀀆􀀃 􀀚􀀋􀀋􀀜􀀊 \nPENGUIN BOOKS \nPublished by the Penguin Group: Penguin Books Ltd, 80 Strand, London WC2R 0RL, England Penguin Putnam Inc., 375 Hudson Street, New York, New York 10014, USA Penguin Books Australia Ltd., Ringwood,Victoria, Australia Penguin Books Canada Ltd, 10 Alcorn Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M4V \n3B2 \nPenguin Books India (P) Ltd, 11 Community Centre, Panchsheel Park, New \nDelhi – 110 017, India \nPenguin Books (NZ) Ltd, Cnr Rosedale and Airborne Roads, Albany, Auckland, \nNew Zealand \nPenguin Books (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd, 5 Watkins Street, Denver Ext 4, Johannesburg 2094, South Africa \nPenguin Books Ltd, Registered Offices: 80 Strand,WC2R 0RL \nFirst published 1891 \nPublished in Penguin Books 2000 First edition electronic: August 2001 \nIntroduction and Notes copyright © Robert Mighall, 2000 Appendix (Introduction to the First Penguin Classics Edition) copyright © Peter Ackroyd, 1985 \nAll rights reserved \nThe moral right of the editor has been asserted \nMaking or distributing electronic copies of this book constitutes copyright infringement and could subject the infringer to civil and/or criminal liability, where applicable.
