of Broadcast Talks\n\nEDITED BYPETER LASLETT \nBASIL BLACKWELL \nOXFORD \nI950 \n## PREFATORY NOTE\n\nTHIS little book is a collection of talks originallydelivered in the B.B.C.Third Programme, andsubsequently printed in The Listener. The series wasconceived and edited by a layman, one who has noclaim to be a physician,a philosopher,or a scientist. The end in view was a conspectus of the evidence nowavailable, and of the theories now being put forward, about what goes on in the body when men and animalsare thinking. To be authoritative, such informationhad to come from the mouths of the men who them-selves made the discoveries and had worked on thehypotheses. It had also to be presented in a form whichwas immediately intelligible not only to a lay editor, but to everybody else who felt that what was beingstudied in the laboratory in this field affected him.Itwas believed, moreover, that it would be both inter-esting and useful to have the opinions of philosopherson the evidence submitted in this way by the scientists. \nSuch a series of talks was bound to be an experimentin broadcasting if only because it was so ambitious. The difficulties were enhanced because of the technicalterms used by the scientists and the unfamiliarity oftheir concepts. In reading the contributions it must beremembered that none of the speakers could assumethat his hearers had listened to any of his predecessors,or possessed specialist knowledge of any kind.Thisaccounts for a certain amount of repetitiveness.Therewas, moreover,no opportunity for consultation between \nvi \nthe various contributors before individual talks werewritten, though Sir Charles Sherrington's introductionwas sent to each of them when he was first approached. The personal attitude of the speakers towards thegeneral problem of the physical basis of mind deter-mined the form of each contribution, but the responsi-bility for the selection of topics and the general shapeof the series must remain with the compiler. \nProfessor Alexander Kennedy of the University ofDurham and Dr.John Bates of the National Hospital,Queen's Square, have given important advice and help.I should like to acknowledge the patient collaborationof all the contributors in the original broadcasts, andalso their permission to reprint the scripts.I shouldparticularly like to record my gratitude to Sir HenryDale,Professor Adrian,Dr.Wilder Penfield, and aboveall to Sir Charles Sherrington.PETER LASLETT.","cbCaic73oL2SwKew","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaic73oL2SwKew","pdf",3506428,96,"English","# Prefatory
