However the numbers have been especially high this year. \nWhile the number of bowls decreases, prices of food continue to rise, making it difficult to balance the budget. \nChina plates cost about $4 apiece, and it is clear that replacing every piece of lost flatware will not be cheap. \nScott Flanagan, manager of Common’s financial operations, said that the problem is rather easily solved. \n“We could control it if everyone would be aware that these things cost money,” he said. \nSchool President Allegra Asplundh-Smith ’04 was informed of the figures about missing Commons’ware by West Quad North Cluster Dean Kathryn Birecki at the Deans'and Presidents' Meeting. \nAsplundh-Smith brought the issue to the student council, where Ali Schouten ’04 and Sarah Wendell ’04 jumped on the opportunity to publicize the problem. \nThe girls creatively caught students’ attention with posters \nContinued on Page A8, Column 1 \nJ. The new Gelb Center was open for visitation all day, and the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library gave special presentations on theresources available to students. \nThe weekend, which usually draws about 200 people, most of whom live nearby, had a surprisingly good turnout this year. \nAccording to Assistant Director of the Parent Fund Alice Tung, who coordinated the program, about 300 came on \nSaturday, although it is difficult to know the exact number since many did not register. \nThe Office of Alumni Affairs mailed invitations to all grandparents, although Ms. Tung concedes that it was probably the beautiful weather that drew the crowd. \nPointing out the highlights of the event, Ms. Tung said that the reception at Addison went very well. \nThe grandparents enjoyed meeting Mrs. Chase, who gave a speech and then greeted attendees in the Addison. During the reception, which lasted from 1-2 p.m . , student musicians performed and food was served. \nAlso, Ms. Tung says that grandparents always enjoy going to their grandchildren’s classes with them, meeting their teachers, and seeing their friends. \nMany grandparents, especially alumni, enjoy the athletic games, both to watch their descendants do well for themselves and to witness the rivalries between schools that were alive when they were students. \nThough several teams had home games, many teams had away matc","cbCaicPe0iE2H7hD","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicPe0iE2H7hD","pdf",15600949,14,"English","# AS DISHES DISAPPEAR, COMMONS CONFRONTS NEW BUDGET WOES\n## Disappearing dishware and budget impact\n# Phillips Academy Grandparents Attend Classes, Meet Faculty, and Tour New Science Center\n## Grandparents’ Day schedule and attendance\n# TEMBA MAQUBELA TO SUCCEED CARTER AS DEAN OF FACULTY\n## Leadership transition and faculty hiring","[{\"question\":\"What problem does Commons face in this issue?\",\"answer\":\"Commons faces budget woes driven by the disappearance of dishware, including bowls, spoons, mugs, and plates, over a two-week period.\"},{\"question\":\"What happens during Phillips Academy’s Grandparents’ Day?\",\"answer\":\"Grandparents attend classes with their grandchildren, enjoy campus events such as receptions and tours, and take part in sports games and presentations.\"},{\"question\":\"Who is named Dean of Faculty, and what will be his immediate focus?\",\"answer\":\"Temba Maqubela is named the new Dean of Faculty to succeed Stephen Carter, with his immediate duty focused on hiring a new and talented faculty.\"}]","The Phillipian - May 14, 2004 | PDF",1789460045,22]
