across appear when, duringthe early years of the evangelical revival, the twobrothers are walking over the English countrysidefrom one city to another and spend entire days sing-ing hymns. On such occasions, the joy of theirfaith, grounded in the discovery of the Holy Spirit'sgift of righteousness and peace, quickened theirdelight in the beauty of the world around them. They understood from the opening words ofthe Book of Genesis that the form and order of thenatural world were created and sustained by theSpirit of God,who“moved upon the face ofthe waters\"when the earth was yet“without form, and void,\"and darkness lay upon the face of thedeep. \nIndeed,the doctrine of the Holy Spirit's dualmission—to restore fallen human beings to theimage of God and to renew the world which theirfall had placed under bondage to evil—stood at thecenter of John Wesley's Christian beliefs from hisstudent days at Oxford. He preached and wroteabout that doctrine long before he experienced thepower of the Spirit in regenerating grace at thefamous Aldersgate Street prayer meeting on May \n24,1738.For nearly a decade before that event heand his brother and other young members of theHoly Club had been seeking the 'holiness, withoutwhich no man shall see the Lord\"(Heb.12:14).Their method was what we would call today adiscipleship program. It consisted of group andprivate prayers;mutual discipline in obedience tothe law of Christ;zealous attendance at the Angli-can church;weekly and often daily participation inthe sacrament of the Lord's Supper;works ofcharity to the poor, the sick, and the imprisoned;and close study of the Scriptures in the originalHebrew and Greek. They discovered very earlythat the central promise of biblical religion,in theOld Testament and the New,was the gift of thehallowing,right-making Spirit. \nYou can see this conviction shining out in thegroup of sermons John Wesley preached in 1732and 1733.The two entitled \"The Circumcision ofthe Heart\"and \"On Grieving the Holy Spirit\"arewell known.Recently, scholars have discovered thatthe manuscript copies of most of the sermonspublished under Charles's name in 1816,long afterthe death of the two brothers, are in fact in JohnWesley's handwriting,as were the","cbCaitouM0NARWIz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitouM0NARWIz","pdf",2582193,92,"English","# Introduction\n# Hymn 1 Father of
