was its centraltheme.Salvation and new life originated therein. It wasthusly proclaimed by the Apostles and by the faithful. \nSuch faith demanded a visible symbol. The cross is foundrepresented in art as early as in the second century, and soonthereafter the Crucified, too,is portrayed. The pagan caricat-ures of the third century testify to it.The first gems, too, with carved portrayals of the Crucified derive from the samecentury. \nThere is at least one Crucifixion scene preserved fromthe fourth century, and in the subsequent epochs there areseveral such as London ivory plates in the fifth and a doorinsert of St.Sabina of Rome in the sixth. \nThe first art work that can be dated with accuracy is theRabulas manuscript of 586 whid is named after a Syrianmonk, its author, and whidh is preserved in the BibliotecaLaurentiniana in Florence.Evidently it is based on an oldercodex which probably originated in Greece. \nThe portrayals of the Crucifixion were inspired andfurthered by the adoration of the Cross. It automaticallyrepresented the counterpart to the belief in the Cross.Itsmost elaborate creations were achieved near the locale of theCrucifixion:Jerusalem. The liturgical Adoration of the Crossemanated from that Holy Town.It originated unquestionablyalmost at the same time the Cross was discovered. \nFROM THE BEGINNING of the fifth century dates a detaileddescription of the Good Friday ceremonies in Jerusalem.Itis the work of Egeria or Aetheria,a female pilgrim. Its con-tent is essentially the victory of the Cross.Emperor Theodo-sius I at about the same time erected a crux gemmata atGolgotha. The Cross became the universal symbol of theLord,or,as expressed in an inscription(of Ephesus)fromthe sixth or seventh century,》the victoriously immortal sym-bol of Christ.《 The symbol refers to the Christological myste-ry of two characters in one person(vertical and horizontaltimbers nailed together)but at the same time it is theeschatological sign of the Returning Christ(the Son of Man,Matthew 24,30 and the expression of the abundance in himEph.3,19 f). \nThe theme of the Cross occurs in the liturgy of theEastern Church together with the feasts of Good Friday, inthree special Cross-Festivities:the Proskynesis or Adorationon the Third Lenten Sunday, the Proodos or Exaltation ofthe Holy Cross on August first, and the Hypsosis, the rais-ing of the
