allergic to working togcther,except perhaps for the purpose of making money.The faculty ofworking togcther actually seems to bc paralyzed,especially in the young-er age groups.If this sounds pessimistic,I can only say that it is a con-clusion born of expericnce.I have spent sixteen years in one large cityparish and I would like to make clear that much of what follows is justone man's opinion from a very limited observation.The big city(Chi-cago)dweller is very self-sufficient.I believe that the task of building aparish community,a miniature Mystical Body,will take a few gell-erations.But the greater the challenge,the greater should be our re-sponse.Others will reap where we have sowed.  \nFirst of all,it seems necessary to set down the fundamental idea:that the primary task of the Church today is to use the spiritual energyof the layman.With surprising vision,Pope Pius XI stressed this point.He said that in our day the apostolate of the laity is as important as thework of the priest.That the layman should be an apostle flows,ofcourse,from the sacraments of baptism and confirmation;unfortunately,for a few hundred years the responsibility of the layman has not beenstressed for various historical reasons.  \nBut in our day,the avesome task of bringing thc modern world toChrist has led us to realize that everybody in the Church must \"pull hisown weight.\"There have becn too many sheep in the Church who ex-pect to be carried on the backs of their shepherds,the clergy.  \nTherefore,in every parish there should be organizations to awakenthe layman toward his responsibilities and to hclp him fulfill them.The  \nPractice for  \nplays about  \nthe feasts  \nof thc  \nliturgy  \nteaches  \nand unites  \nparishioners.  \nlayman will realize
