tragedy of the 1948 Arab-Israel conflictis still evident 18 years afterwards.More than one million Palestine Arabs are stilllivingas refugees in the camps that scar the landscape of the Middle East and in shelters whichthey have found for themselves in the villages,towns and cities of the countries where theytook refuge—Jordan,Lebanon,the Syrian Arab Republic—and in the enclave of theGaza Strip.  \nAs a result of the conflict hundreds of thousands of Arabs left the territory that isnow Israel.When they fled,the refugees believed that they would soon be able to returnto their homes.Many left
