Marranos (also called Conversos and New Christians) were former Jews in Spain and Portugal who converted to Christianity under coercion or hard pressure, and their descendents in later generations.  \nMy first adult encounter with the Marrano theme occurred in the early 1970s. A visiting junior professor at Princeton, I was invited to some event in Miami Beach. My host lent me a car, which I parked near the beach and went for a swim with my wife. On our return we found that the car had been broken into and all our things stolen, including an expensive watch I had received as present. Nearby I saw a band of local youngsters, the kind that hangs around places of tourist leisure.
