\nAbout the author \nAngela Southall has been working with children, young people and families in anNHS setting since 1986.Since qualifying as a clinical psychologist she has workedtirelessly to promote a psycho-social understanding of children's mental health.Herapproach to service delivery has been shaped by her experiences of the problemsencountered by children and families in their day-to-day lives. Her commitmentto community psychology has led to the initiation and development of a number ofmulti-agency community services and partnerships, core aspects of which have beenthe extending of psychological skills to non-specialist practitioners and the inclusionof service users and their families in service design and delivery. Her approach to childand adolescent mental health services has generated new ways of working,as well asdemonstrating that it is possible to offer-and sustain-community-based servicesthat are valued and effective, without lengthy periods on ‘waiting lists'. \nAngela continues to lead a diverse,multi-disciplinary Child Psychology andPsychological Therapies service in Staffordshire, whilst also developing the county'sIntensive Fostering Programme, which offers specialist foster care to young offendersas an alternative to custody. This is the first collaborative partnership of its kindbetween Health,Youth Offending and Family Placement Services. \nAngela's clinical specialism is in the field of parenting, attachment and trauma. \nAcknowledgements \nIam grateful to Abby Marr for additional research and Professor Chris Frith for a
