It describes beliefs that the spirit world became close on that night, leading to bonfires and disguises. It then traces the blending of Celtic and Roman-era traditions with Christianity, including All Saints’ Day and All Hallows’ Eve, and how the name evolved into Halloween. This was Samhain (pronounced "SOW-in"), a festival of the ancient Celts that marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. To the people gathered around the flames, it was a bit like a New Year's celebration crossed with a farewell to the sun. The crops were in, the animals were brought down from the summer pastures, and the whole community braced for the cold months ahead. Can you imagine a party that was both a thank-you for the harvest and a nervous glance at the winter to come? That was Samhain.
That nervous glance had a lot to do with what the Celts believed about this one special night. People told a story that on Samhain the boundary between our world and the world of spirits grew thin, so thin that visitors could slip through. To confuse any unwelcome guests, some people wore disguises made of animal skins, hoping to blend in rather than be recognized. Those bonfires were not just for warmth, either; the Celts believed the flames offered protection and a fresh start for the year ahead. It is a custom built entirely on a feeling we still know well: the shiver of a dark night when anything seems possible.
Those flickering fires would eventually meet a very different tradition traveling in from the south. As the Roman Empire spread across Celtic lands, and later as Christianity grew, old festivals and new beliefs began to blend together. Centuries later, the Catholic Church set aside November 1st as All Saints' Day, a day to honor the saints and holy people who had died. An older word for saints was "hallows," so All Saints' Day was also called All Hallows' Day, a name that will start to sound familiar. When two traditions land on nearly the same date, they rarely stay strangers for long.
Sure enough, the evening before All Hallows' Day picked up its own name and personality. People called it All Hallows' Eve, meaning simply the night before the holy day, and over time the phrase got squeezed and softened in everyday speech. "All Hallows' Eve"shrank to "Hallowe'en," and finally to the word you shout every October: Halloween. So the name you know is really an old phrase that got worn smooth, like a stone tumbled in a river. Isn't it strange to think that when you say "Halloween," you are speaking a piece of language over a thousand years old?
That well-worn word crossed an ocean to reach the holiday we celebrate today. In the
1800s, waves of immigrants, many from Ireland and Scotland, brought their autumn customs with them to the United States. Their traditions mixed with those of their new neighbors, and the holiday slowly grew friendlier, more playful, and far less about spirits. Costumes stayed, but the animal skins gave way to storebought outfits, and neighborhood trick-or-treating spread across the country in the 1900s. A festival that once warned of winter had become a night for candy, laughter, and doorbells.
It is worth remembering that Halloween is only one of the world's autumn celebrations, and not the model for the rest. Mexico's Day of the Dead and various observances of All Souls' Day, for example, are their own holidays with their own meanings, not simply Halloween by another name. Today, a National Retail
Federation survey each year finds that Halloween is one of the most popular holidays for spending in the United States, with billions spent on costumes, candy, and decorations. That is a remarkable journey for a night that began with a single bonfire on a cold Celtic hill. The next time you carve a pumpkin, remember you are keeping a tradition alive that is older than almost anything else you celebrate.
The Origins of Halloween
Name:

| Solve each problem.
Use the article to answer the question.
1) What did the festival of Samhain mark for the ancient Celts?
A.
