He painted two family groups, some of the women with drops of milk in their breasts, ready to people the land again. Then he built a platform and painted mythic beings high on the wall. Inside back cover: The largest figure is the dangerous spirit of Namandjolk. At top right is Namarrkon, the lightning man. Lines of lightning join his hands and feet. The stone axes attached to his head, elbows and knees produce thunder and lightning when struck against clouds or the ground. Underneath him are some saratoga fish,‘to feed the people’. Inside front cover: Namarrkon’s wife Barrkinj is painted above one of the groups of women.
p. vii: A Wandjina at the Kalingi Odin site, west Kimberley, Western Australia.
This book is dedicated to the Aboriginal people of the Northern Territory, who for the last two decades have been generously and patiently teaching me about their traditional life and culture.
CONTENTS
Preface ›› x
Notes on terminology ›› xiv
1 Exploration ›› 1
European discovery of Australia
2 Colonisation ›› 29 Early Sydney
3 Confrontation ›› 58
Early Tasmania and Victoria
D4 epopulation ›› 96
A century of struggle (1820s–1920s)
5 Tradition ›› 133 Indigenous life at first contact
6 Origins ›› 170 The last 50 000 years
7 ssimilation ›› 201
A time of trouble (1930s–1970s)
8 Resilience ›› 234
The story continues
Abbreviations to the notes ›› 265 Notes ›› 267
Further reading ›› 293
Photo acknowledgements ›› 295 Index ›› 297
|

INDONESIA
Flores Java | | | | | | | | |
Timor | | | | |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| | | | | | ARAFURA SEA | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | Bathurst Island | | | | | Melville Island
TI WI | Crocker
IslandCOBOURG PENINSULA |
| TIMOR SEA | | | | | | | | | | DARWIN
KAKADU
ARNHEM LAND
Kalumburu
Forrest River
Wyndham Kununurra
Fitzmaurice R Katherine VictoriWaRDAMAN Roper R
Daly R | | | |
| | INDIAN
OCEAN
Port Hedland | | | | | | | KIMBERLEY
Derby Broome
GREAT SANDY
DESERT | | | Wave Hill
GURINDJI
NORTHERN
TERRITORY
WARL PIRI Coniston
Yuendumu | | |
| | North West Cape
Tropic of Capricorn
Bernier Island Dorre Islan","cbCaij2tC4GmKHm5","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaij2tC4GmKHm5","pdf",7118613,321,"English","# Preface
# Notes on terminology
# Exploration
## European discovery of Australia
# Colonisation
## Early Sydney
# Confrontation
## Early Tasmania and Victoria
# Population
## A century of struggle (1820s–1920s)
# Tradition
## Indigenous life at first contact
# Origins
## The last 50 000 years
# Assimilation
## A time of trouble (1930s–1970s)
# Resilience
## The story continues
# Abbreviations to the notes
# Notes
# Further reading
# Photo acknowledgements
# Index","[{"question":"What historical stages does the book cover about Aboriginal people in Australia?","answer":"It moves through exploration and European discovery, colonisation and early Sydney, confrontation including early Tasmania and Victoria, and later themes such as tradition, origins, assimilation, and resilience.
