The text situates the crisis within ecological harm, political power, and contested national trajectories, framing the story through lectures and reflections developed over time. It also establishes moral and institutional connections, including tributes and acknowledgments, and introduces the work’s guiding questions about despotism and the end of national history. The introduction sets out the setting, the origins of the account, and the thematic stakes for understanding Nigeria’s They came together in a series of three public lectures as an attempted cohesive account of an event and its portents within the context of a continent, and of external histories, thanks to a residency stint in Harvard University with which, as it happens, I have a very understanding relationship. To Harvard President Neil Rudenstein, my former student, friend, and co11eague Henry Louis (Skip) Gates Jr., and the staf of the DuBois Institute of Harvard-JoAnne Kenda11 and company-my sincere appreciation for that breathing space sorely needed after my \"Rambo\" departure from the Nigerian nation space. \n:knowledgrnents \nI must not miss this opportunity to express also especially fervent appreciation to that ill-understood institution called UNEsco for its spontaneous moral and practical support of the beleaguered citizen of a member state that chose to act contrary to its international undertakings and membership code of conduct. I little realized when, as chairman of the UNEsco-affiliated International Theatre Institute, I had to preside over meetings involving problems of colleagues from some totalitarian states, that a few years thence I would also become the subject of such concerns. To Director-General Federico Mayor, Henri Lopez, his long-suffering secretary, Madame Josette Blot, and other staff of uNESCO, I wish to confess how unexpected and overwhelmed I have been by their solidarity and solicitude, and strategies for practical upliftment. Whichever ironic paths we find ourselves, individually, obliged to take to restore that benighted nation Nigeria to a humanistic course, and make her once again a worthy partner in the ideals for which UNESCO was founded I am unlikely to forget the reality of an extended family of global culture that one tends to take for granted. \nThere are many others, of course, more than deserving of mention, whose identities must remain, for now, undisclosed. \nThe irony of the date on which the above is written has just registered: It is Independence Day in another people's land, the United States of America. \nLondon July 4• 1995 \nw. s. \nContents \nIntroduction, 3 \nA Flawed Origin-But No Worse than Others, 17 The Spoils of Power: The Buha","cbCaibSs7HVmrLt8","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibSs7HVmrLt8","pdf",1582868,178,"English","# Introduction\n## The Last Despot and the End of Nigerian History?\n## A Flawed Origin - But No Worse than Others\n## The Spoils of Power: The Buhari-Shagari Casebook\n## The National Question: Internal Imperatives\n## Epilogue: Death of an Activist\n## Appendix 1\n## Appendix II\n## Index","[{\"question\":\"What is the main focus of the book?\",\"answer\":\"The book focuses on a personal narrative of the Nigerian crisis, presenting events and their portents in a broader continental context.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the author present the origins of the narrative?\",\"answer\":\"The introduction explains that the material was first published in Nigerian media around June 1994 and later shaped into a more cohesive account through public lectures.\"},{\"question\":\"What themes are introduced in the opening section?\",\"answer\":\"The opening links the crisis to political leadership and despotism while also situating it in a real social and ecological setting, including the Ogoni region’s oil-related environmental damage.\"}]","The Open Sore of a Continent - A Personal Narrative of the Niaerian Crisis | PDF",1789989458,274]
