Her resolve stems from a warning intuition that Carl may be in danger, echoing the past when she helped him after a severe injury. The story opens against the backdrop of Carl’s shattered personal life following his remarriage to Petula Hogan, and the emotional tension between Gail, Carl’s pride, and the betrayal she cannot accept.","THE ODDS AGAINST \nMARGARET PARGETER \nCHAPTER ONE \nGail knew she had been crazy to come out on such a night, in the middle of a snowstorm in the middle of March, but this didn't lessen her determination to reach Deanly. The roads were treacherous and every time she hit a particularly icy patch she thought, this is it! but amazingly she kept on going. Her small car responded to the reckless pressure of her foot with a heart worthy of a much larger vehicle. \nOnly another few miles, she prayed, wondering what Carl would say when he saw her. She was supposed to be staying overnight with her sister, Ruth. He would be furious with her for returning like this, just to apologise for being rude to him earlier. He had no patience with people who took foolish risks. \nUnhappily Gail bit her lip. She would just have to let him believe she was a girl who never stopped to think, because she wouldn't dare tell him the real reason why she had come back. Her apologies could have waited, but when her intuition had told her that Carl was in some kind of danger, that was an entirely different matter! Once before on receiving such a message, from senses almost too sensitively tuned as far as he was concerned, she had found him alone and desperately in need of someone to help him. That was when he had broken his leg. \nMany would have laughed at the very idea of Carl Elliot, with all the immense assurance of his thirty-‐six years and six foot two frame of superb masculinity being in any kind of trouble he couldn't handle—but then not everyone knew of the misfortunes which had beset him during the past year, including the biggest misfortune ofthe lot, Petula Hogan! \nPetula Hogan. Gail's foot unwisely hit the accelerator again, wishing it was Petula's head. How she hated her—although she had learned to disguise her feelings When Carl was around. For months he had worshipped her, and Petula had appeared to share his feelings. Certainly she had always been at the stables and never missed a race meeting with him if she could help it. Gail still found it difficult to believe how, after Carl had broken his leg and wasn't able to squire her around in the manner she was used to, Petula had swiftly succumbed to the attractions of an American millionaire who bred horses in the Blue Grass State of Kentucky. \nThe wedding had taken place six months ago, and while Gail knew that seeing Carl married to another woman might have finally broken her heart, she doubted if it could have been much worse than having to stand helplessly by, watching him suffer.'She isn't worth it!' she had told him that very afternoon, catching him gazing at a small photograph of Petula which, despite her treachery, he apparently hadn't the willpower to throw away. He had looked so pale and grim, Gail had been driven to speak out. \n'Can't you learn to mind your own business?' he had snarled, replacing the snap in his breast pocket. \nKnowing he carried the image of someone who had betrayed him over his heart hurt so much she was stung to retort, 'I'd have thought a man like you would have had more pride!' \nIf anyone had dared to speak to him like this before he couldn't remember. His eyes had seared her furiously. 'You know nothing about a man like me. ' \nIndignation colouring her small, anxious face, Gail had replied rashly, 'I know you're oneof the best owners in the country, and because you can't have—everything you'd like, you've stopped caring about anything else. ' \n'You're talking drivel!' he had retorted icily. 'I still breed horses, and now that my leg's better and your father's no longer here, don't I work all the hours God sends?' 'But you don't enjoy it,' Gail had cried bitterly, her green eyes tortured. 'Nothing really matters anymore!' \n'Aren't you thinking more-‐ of yourself?' he had accused savagely. 'You miss the excitement of rushing from one end of the country to the other. ' \n'You know it isn't that .. .' she began, then caught her bottom lip between confus","cbCain5zbVcnymbx","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCain5zbVcnymbx","pdf",731630,10,95,"English","en",105,"# Chapter One\n## Gail’s journey in the snowstorm\n## The past promise and Carl’s past injury\n## Petula Hogan’s betrayal and Carl’s remarriage\n## Gail and Carl’s confrontations and pride","[{\"question\":\"Why is Gail driving back to Deanly during the snowstorm?\",\"answer\":\"Gail believes Carl is in danger and feels compelled to reach him.
