most frequently asked for andsold in particular, named bookstores.No-where in The New Review of Books andReligion will one find a so-called \"best-seller\"list. \nThis is a deliberate arrangement;for tocome up with a realistic\"best-seller\"list isa tricky and almost impossible business.Too often the so-called“best-sellers”turnout to be the books reported by a chosencross-section of bookstores, stores thatare far from being truly representative. \nOne widely-cited\"best-seller\"list of re-ligious books emanates from groups ofstores with a definite theological bias andwhose local managers have little controlover the nature of the book merchandiseoffered on their shelves—for it comesfrom a distributors'headquarters in apackage arrangement.Even the presti-gious Publishers Weekly does not seem torecognize that in highlighting the religiousbook market, its editorial staff tends togive undue credence to a so-called“Reli-gious Best-sellers”list.It would be pos-sible to construct a similarly biased listbased on selected bookstores which arecompletely eclectic or theologicallyslanted in other directions. \nCatholic bookstores,Protestant de-nominational bookstores,so-called Chris-tian bookstores—you name them!Unlessreally put through a homogenizing proc-ess month after month,their\"best-sell-ers”could almost be predicted in advanceaccording to authors, publishers, andthemes. \nAnother reason the idea of a \"best-seller\"list does not seem right is the una-vailability of completely objective marketinformation. Why should importantbooksellers take the trouble to go throughtheir orders, sales, and returns with fine-tooth combs, month after month,in orderto provide the absolutely accurate infor-mation which a truly honest list of \"best-sellers”would necessitate?Publishers donot, and probably cannot, release actualsales figures, save perhaps in big, roundnumbers when a startlingly large demandfor a title is generated among the publicFurther, how can they predict the percent-age of returns from bookstores for many \ntitles?At any given moment in a month, itis pure guesswork as to how many orderedbut unsold copies will land back in thepublishers's warehouse. \nDevotees of particular theological posi-tions are understandably put off by occa-sional“best-seller”listings which appar-ently ignore a goodly portion of thepublishing world. It used to be true thatthe\"mainstream\"denominational andinterdenominational press—especiallymagazines--blithely ignored the widely-sold books from
