\nby Christopher Anstey \nThis book is not,as its title mightsuggest,in any way a guide-it is a verysatirical and highly amusing poem inthe form of a set ofletters,describing-and making fun of -the fashionablelife at Bath in the late eighteenthcentury. When it was published in1766,Horace Walpole wrote to afriend:\"There is a new thing publishedthat will make you bepiss your cheekswith laughter...describing the life ofBath, and incidentally everything else-but so much wit,so much humour, fun, poetry,so much originality, never mettogether before...I can say it byheart, though a quarto, and if I hadtime would write it down, for it is notyet reprinted and not one to be had'.Christopher Anstey(1724-1805)was agentleman scholar,a Fellow of King'sCollege Cambridge whose levity and witso offended the senior members of thecollege they refused to grant him hisMA:his son describes the occasion ofhis Latin oration, when his father fellsuddenly into a rhapsody of adverbs soingeniously and pointedly disposed asto convey an obvious meaning withoutthe aid of much grammatical connec-tion,and being delivered with greatanimation and emphasis, conveyed acensure and ridicule upon the wholeproceedings'.The New Bath Guide wasalso highly praised by Gray(whose'Elegy in a Country Churchyard'Ansteytranslated into Latin),and is a delight-ful and brilliant example of what is bestin the English literary tradition ofsatirical verse. \n# TheNEW BATH GUIDE\n\n# Christopher Anstey\n\nTheNew Bath Guide \nwith an introduction byKenneth G.Ponting \nAdams &Dart \nFirst published in 1766 come! There is a new thingpublished that will make you bepiss your cheeks withlaughter. It is called The New Bath Guide. It stole intothe world, and for a fortnight no soul looked upon it,concluding its name was its true name.No such thing. It is a set of letters in verse,in all kinds of verses describingthe life of Bath, and incidentally everything else—but somuch wit,so much humour, fun, poetry,so much origin-ality,never met together before. Then the man has abetter ear than Dryden or Handel.Apropos to Dryden,he has burlesqued his St.Cecilia, that you will never readit again without laughing. There is a description of amilliner's box in all the terms of landscape, painted laznsand chequered shades,a Moravian ode and a Moravianditty that are incomparable, and the best names that areever composed.I can say it by heart, though a quarto, and if I had time I would write it down for it is not yetreprinted and not one to be had’.1 \nSo Horace Walpole wrote to Montague on 20 June 1766. \nChristopher Anstey, the author of this most successfulpoem, was born at Brinkley in Cambridgeshire, wherehis father was Rector,on 31 October 1724.He was atschool at Eton, and then went to King's College,Cam-bridge,where he achieved some fame for his Latin verses. He became a Fellow, but his M.A.was withheld due tolack of seriousness in his Latin orations. His son describesthe position well: \n'King's College had immemorially exercised the right ofqualifying its members for their degree within the walls oftheir own society without that regular performance ofacts and exercises generally in use in the university schools, and required of other colleges. It had been proposed as asalutory regulation and a first employment for the bachelorfellows of Kings that they should occasionally composeLatin declamations, and pronounce them in public school,a regulation altogether new and unprecedented in theannals of Kings College. My father, who was at that timeof six years'standing in the university and the SeniorBatchelor of his year, finding himself suddenly calledupon to make a Latin oration upon a given subject,resis-ted it in common with the rest of the junior fellows as a \ndegradation and an entrenchment on the privileges of thesociety. The declamat","cbCaijFJOGlnQ83f","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijFJOGlnQ83f","pdf",2926580,"English","# Introduction\n## Publication and
