Taylor’s “The Neglected Hardy” presents a sustained critical attention to Thomas Hardy’s lesser-regarded novels. The prefatory material explains the project’s purpose: shifting judgment beyond Hardy’s best-known fiction and arguing that these works remain both interesting and rewarding. Taylor frames the book as an expansion of enjoyment from reading Hardy’s novels, supported by scholarly guidance and permission to quote from the Thomas Hardy Memorial Collection, and it records personal thanks for encouragement and collaboration.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/literature/","Literature",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/the-neglected-hardy-prefatory-note-thomas-hardys-lesser-novels/320095/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/the-neglected-hardy-prefatory-note-thomas-hardys-lesser-novels/320095.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Evangeline","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-11-04","2026-09-21",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",11,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What asked me the same question ofthe lesser novels the answer would have been a distinctaffirmative. For this book has been inspired by the enjoyment ofreading all Hardy's novels and by the belief that those which areless highly esteemed are nevertheless both interesting andrewarding. At a time when studies of Hardy's major fictioncontinue to proliferate at an astonishing rate, the critical focusshould surely be shifted for once to the lesser novels,in which Isuspect there is a growing interest. And it is this regard for someoften neglected works that I hope to stimulate. \nI have always been encouraged in this enterprise by my wifePamela, whose enthusiasm and bright good spirits and humourare invaluable;my first and greatest acknowledgement of thanksmust always go to her.In writing about Hardy's lesser novels Ihave enjoyed the immense benefit of the wisdom, advice andfriendship of Professor Kenneth J.Fielding and Mr T.R.M.Creighton,of the Department of English Literature,Universityof Edinburgh,as well as the great pleasure of working with them.I thank Kenneth Fielding and Tom Creighton warmly for theircontinuing interest and generosity. \nI wish to thank the Trustees of the Thomas Hardy MemorialCollection in the Dorset County Museum for their kind per-mission to quote from materials in the Hardy Collection. And Iwould like to thank Hardy friends and scholars who encouragedme to publish my studies of theselesser novels, including DrJamesGibson,Professor Ian Gregor and Dr Frank Pinion,as well asthose other Hardy enthusiasts who responded so kindly to theoriginal draft of Chapter 4,which in a slightly different form con-stituted a lecture I delivered on 14 August 1978 at the SummerSchool organised at Weymouth by the Thomas Hardy Society. \nAt The Macmillan Press Miss Julia Tame and Mr T.M.Farmiloe have been a constant support and courteously helpful \nat every stage of planning and production, and I offer them mygratitude for all their
