lone grunt stands out amonga huge school of snappers millingabout in shallow waters.Coastalwaters are rich in food for fishand provideideal nurseriesfor their young.A huge varietyof wildlife make our coastlinesinteresting places to explore. \n100 \n# WHERE LANDMEETS THE SEA\n\nFrom spectacular,wave-battered rockyshores and hot sandybeaches fringed with coral,to muddy estuaries and \nmangrove forests, coastlinesare fascinating meetingplaces between two verydifferent environments. Most shoreline plants andanimals are sea inhabitantsthat have adapted to livingout of water for part ofevery day.But a few, suchas insects high on the shore, plants on sand dunes andbirds that feed on the shoreor nest on cliffs, are landdwellers. The twice-daily ebband flow of the tide exposes \nHERMIT AT HOME \nHermit crabs lookungainly as they crawlover the shore scavengingfor dead animal remains.Yet they are well suitedfor shoreline survival. The large front pincercan be wedged acrossthe opening of the shell, sealing the entrance likean armour-plated door. Then the crab can berolled about by thewaves without damageto its soft body insidethe shell. The crab'sbody also remains moistinside the shell when thetide goes out and it isleft exposed to the air \ncoastline creaturesto dramatic changesin temperature and \nwater levels. These changes are asgreat as seasonal changes on land, but they take place every day insteadof every year, making this a verychallenging habitat for wildlife. \n# BEACH BURROWBS\n\nA sandy beach often seens to be empty of life butmost of its inhabitants are buried beneath thesurface.Thesc range from microscopic bacteriato all sorts of shellfish, crustaceans(such ascrabs),worms and sea urchins. They trap food \nparticles from the water brought in by the tides or extractnourishment from the sand, rather like an earthworm eats soil. \nFOSSIL FINDS \nFossils of oceanthis ammonite, show.that the rockswere once under the sea. \nAmmonites were shellfish related tomodern-day octopuses, squid andnautiluses. When the animal wasalive,a head with tentacles stuckout of the end of the shell, but itcould retreat back inside andclose the opening.Ammonites livedhundreds of millions of years ago.A rocky shore has a variety of placesfor animals to feed and shelter. They canlurk under rocks and boulders, amongtangled masses of seaweed or in rock \n# HIDING PLACES\n\nlimpets without dislodging them.Limpets usually move aboutwhen the tide is in,grazing on algae on the rocks. They returnto their home base when the tide goes out. \n# CLIFF COLONIES\n\nMany seabirds nest on rocky cliffs where it is difficult for predators to reach theireggs and where they are close to their food supply in the sea.Puffins live in \ncomplicated nest burrows on cliff tops and have to choose sites with enoughsoil. The large, colourful bill of the Atlantic puffin plays an important rolein pair formation and courtship.Outside the breeding season, the puffin'sbill is smaller and less brightly coloured. \n# LIFE BETWEENTHE TIDES\n\nhe lives and activities of shore creaturesare controlled largely by the rhythmof the tides, which creep up the shoreand then down again, roughly twice every24 hours. In some parts of the world, suchas the Mediterranean, the tides are very small, but in ","cbCairnm1bfajady","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairnm1bfajady","pdf",3082982,36,"English","# Where
