Meredith had positions on everything, delivered from the kitchen island with one hand in the cracker box, and one of them, last winter, watching some show where a funeral went past, was that putting a baby in black should be amisdemeanor. So: navy, white tights, the patent shoes she’ll have kicked off by noon. For three weeks I have dressed her, fed her, and decided things for her by guessing what her mother would have said, and her mother would have said navy.  \nThe driver gets out and opens the curbside door, and a woman steps out of it.  \nI know her from one photograph. Study, third shelf, a beach in the off-season: Meredith laughing into the wind, and this woman beside her not quite managing it, caught somewhere between deciding to smile and doing it.
