NATIVE AMERICANLITERATURE:The Problem of Myth\n\nPaula Gunn Allen \nIt is difficult if not impossible at the presenttime to speak coherently about myth becausethe term has become so polluted by misuse.Yet no discussion of Native American litera-ture can proceed without a meaningful con-cept of what myth is,how it works, and thepart that mythopoeic vision plays in bothliterature and life. \nMost commonly, myth is used as a synonymfor lie.Used to suggest something more de-vious than lie,it implies a malicious intentto defraud one into actions or judgments thatare false, unrealistic, irrational,or satanic. Thus, any attitude or idea that does not con-form to contemporary \"enlightened\"defini-tions of reality are termed myths. The RandomHouse Dictionary defines myth as follows: \n1.a traditional or legendary story, usually con-cerning some superhuman being or some allegedperson or event, with or without a determinablebasis of fact or a natural explanation, esp.,atraditional or lengendary story that is concernedwith deities or demigods and the creation of theworld and its inhabitants.2.stories or matter ofths kind…3.any invented story, idea or concept...4.an imaginary or fictitious thing or person. \n5.an unproved collective belief that is accepteduncritically and is used to justify a social institu-tion.. \nEssentially,all parts of the definition indicatea prevailing belief in the fictitiousness ofmyth;such words as alleged, determinable, fact, explanation all imply falsity or,at least,ques-tionable accuracy. \nIn a way, contemporary usage reflects anAmerican myth about myth and associatedphenomena, and this metamyth is as decep-tive as it implies that myth itself is,hiding,as it does,a reality about ourselves and thenature of human experience that we can onlyignore at our peril.Part of this metamythis the belief that there is such a thing asdeterminable fact,natural(right)explana- \ntions,reality that can be determined outsidethe human agency of discovery,fact-finding,and determination. That such an attitudeitself is more in the nature of belief than ofreality is attested to by physicists,psycho-analysts,visionary mystics, poets, and artists, and by the human experience of thousandsof years and thousands of cultures. \nA myth, contrary to the implicit assump-tion contained in the contemporary view, isnot a belief. There is nothing in the termitself or in its linguistic function that canreasonably allow such an interpretation.Mythos, the Greek word from which our wordcomes, means simply woord or sfory. From thiswe see that a myth is a particular lan-guage-phenomenon that reflects attitudesand beliefs but is,at base,a vehicle,a meansof transmitting information of a particularsort.Amyth is a particular kind of narrative;in Native American cultures it is related toreligious systems;but then,in Native Ameri-can societies, everything is related to NativeAmerican religions. \n# Mythic Narrative\n\nThe mythic narrative,as an articulation ofhuman thought and experience not express-ible in other forms, must be seen as a neces-sary dimension of human expression andexperience. It is in this sense that the truthor realism incorporated into mythic struc-tures can be acknowledged. In this regard,Rollo May defines myth“in its historicallyaccurate sense of a psycho-biological patternwhich gives meaning and direction to experi-ence.\"Thus,the mythic dimension of expe-rience-the psycho-spiritual ordering of
