of“The Mother Tongue”is designed toguide children to an intelligent appreciation and enjoy-ment of good English,to help them to speak andwrite correctly, and to introduce them to the study ofgrammar. \nTo appreciate the power and beauty of any language,a child must become familiar with well-written proseand verse in selections that shall be interesting fromhis own point of view as well as acceptable to the criti-cal scholar.By familiar association with such writings, and wisely directed study of them, the child's taste iscultivated and a love of literature is fostered. \nWith this in view, the book provides selections fromgood authors,in prose and verse, together with full in-structions for their use in different ways.Exercisesfor reading, study, discussion, and learning by heartaccompany the selections.A similar study of the mate-rial contained in the pupil's reading book will followas a natural result, and thus these lessons form an intro-duction to the elementary study of literature.Twolong selections(\"Story of Gemila,\"“Hiawatha's Sail-ing\")have been introduced and made the basis of typi-cal exercises,to indicate the manner in which such prose \nand verse may be used, and to afford opportunity forfurther practice,as the needs of particular classes maysuggest. \nAccuracy in speaking and writing can be securedonly by a process of imitation, and for this the essen-tials are a“copy”and occasions for practice.Suchcopies or patterns are therefore provided in sufficientquantity and variety to direct attention to acceptedusage and to arouse the child's interest and observation. The necessary repetition is ensured by a variety ofexercises, each of which will be recognized by childrenas practical and useful. \nThe uses of punctuation marks and capital letters areexplained and exemplified in the first half of the book, and ample opportunity is afforded for applying the rulesas fast as they are learned. \nThe subject of letter writing is developed in its natu-ral order, beginning with the child's own friendly notesand continuing through all the essential phases of theart. Here, again, full provision has been made forcontinuous practice. \nInasmuch as usage in many matters of detail is farfrom being absolutely fixed, the authors have presentedonly the latest accepted forms,or the general rule whichmay always be followed with safety. For example,com-mas have been omitted in addresses on envelopes, inaccordance with a custom which is rapidly gainingground;and only those rules for the use of the commawhich are supported by general usage have been broughtto the pupil's attention.Further study of grammatical","cbCaimVWR2UiLs43","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimVWR2UiLs43","pdf",21494201,336,"English","# Preface\n## Purpose and teaching
