What’s that moving in the moonlight? A shiny cocoon wiggles and jiggles. \nSomething is waking up from a long winter’s sleep. \nSix little legs uncurl. \nTwo tiny antennae unfurl. \nAnd four salt and pepper wings stretch and quiver in the breeze. \nWatch out! Hungry predators are nearby. \nQuick, fly away! \nThe peppered moth joins its sisters, brothers and cousins. Most have speckled, freckled wings. \nBut sometimes a peppered moth is born with wings as dark as charcoal. \nThe moths flitter and flutter…Skitter and swoop and loop the loop all night long. They look for food and try not to get eaten themselves. \nWatch out for bats! \nAs the sun rises, night-time creatures must find a safe place to rest. Peppered moths doze on lichen-covered branches. \nBe silent! Be still! \nSomeone else is looking for food now. \nWho is disguised? Who will survive? \nOh no! Charcoal black wings are easy to spot on the pale branches. \nThese dark coloured moths will be a feast for hungry chicks! \nThe speckled, freckled moths are masters of disguise. Their salt and pepper wings keep them safe from hungry eyes. \nThe very next night they lay eggs of their own. The new moths will have salt and pepper wings too, just like their parents. \nEvery year, the same thing happens. \nHundreds of tiny eggs hatch. The moths with the best camouflage survive long enough to have children, and pass on their salt and pepper wings. \nThis is why most peppered moths were speckled and freckled. \nUntil the world began to change. \nPeople built factories and burned coal to power magnificent machines. They made steam trains to take things here and there and everywhere. \nChimneys filled the air with smoke and soot. \nPollution stained the clouds and blackened the branches were the peppered moths rest. \nA bird is hunting for a snack. \nNow that their world is darker, which moths are disguised? Which moths will survive? \nThe darkest moths are the masters of disguise. Their charcoal-coloured wings keep them safe from hungry eyes. \nThey now live long enough to lay eggs of their own. And pass on their wing colour to their… \nChildren and grandchildren … and great grandchildren. \nAfter fifty years, there are just as many peppered moths as there have ever been. But most are charcoal-coloured now. And speckled, freckled moths are rare. \nThey have adapted to changes in their world. \nNext time you scramble through a forest, ramble near a hedgerow or run around a garden… Be silent. Be still. \nLook closely at the trees. You might spot a moth with wings as dark as charcoal. Or a moth with speckled, freckled wings. \nBecause their story didn’t end when the world was a darker place. \nPeople decided to clean up the air. They burned less coal and found new ways to power machines. \nYear by year by year cities grew greener. The air all around became cleaner. \nAnd the trees shed their sooty bark. \nThe speckled, freckled moths are camouflaged once more! \nAnd live long enough to pass on their salt and pepper wings to their children. \nToday both types of moths find places to survive. \nThey are still telling their story… \nOf light and dark. Of change and adaptation, of survival… \nand hope.","cbCaidrnhn55elPA","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidrnhn55elPA","pdf",181572,"English","# The Moth Emerges\n## Night Flight and Predators\n## Reproduction and Camouflage Inheritance\n# The World Changes\n## Pollution and Darker Wings\n## Survival Through Adaptation\n# Human Response and a Return to Camouflage\n## Greener Cities and Cleaner Air\n## Passing Traits to the Next Generation","[{\"question\":\"What is the main conflict in the moth’s life story?\",\"answer\":\"The moth must survive changing conditions while evading hungry predators and predators’ search for food.\"},{\"question\":\"How does pollution affect which moths survive?\",\"answer\":\"When people burned coal and blackened the branches, charcoal-colored moths became harder to spot and survived more often to reproduce.\"},{\"question\":\"Why do speckled, freckled moths return later in the story?\",\"answer\":\"After people clean up the air and burn less coal, trees lose sooty bark, and speckled, freckled moths regain effective camouflage.\"}]","The Moth - A Story of Light and Dark - Change, Adaptation, Survival, and Hope | PDF"]
