Addresses related challenges such as imprecations (cursings) in the Psalms, treating them as major tests of divine morality. Proposes and evaluates interpretive approaches, including wartime-ethic distinctions and arguments that conquest language may be figurative hyperbole. Uses these cases to model how to approach other moral difficulties in the Old Testament.","1THE MORALITYOF GOD \n# CHRISTIAN ANSWERSTO HARD QUESTIONS\n\nIN THE OLD TESTAMENT \nG.K.BEALE sametime he does things and commands people in the Old Testamentto do things that do not appear to be good. One famous example isGod's command to Israel to exterminate every man, woman, andchild of the Canaanites(e.g.,cf.Deut.20:I2-I5 with 20:16-I8). \nSome believe that such a God cannot be good, since this direc-tive of God's is virtually equivalent to his commanding Israel tocommit an act of ethnic cleansing, which would not be worthy ofthe loving andgracious God of the Bible.Though severalkinds ofproblems pertaining to God's moralityin the Old Testament couldbe discussed,²this booklet will deal primarily with the particularproblem concerning the killing of the Canaanites and,second-arily,the imprecations(or cursings)in the Psalms, since thesepose perhaps the greatest potential challenges to the morality ofGod.Some of the principles that we find standing behind thesetwo major issues also underlie an approach to some of the othermoral problems. Thus, the issue of the Canaanites and that ofthe imprecations in the Psalms will serve as examples of how toapproach other similar kinds of problems in the Old Testament. \n## BEFORE WE MOVE ON\n\n+Which parts of the Old Testament
