have the readersense the problems confronting the Board \nomea \nae \n# THE MIRACLEOF FORT WASHINGTON\n\nERMANTOWN ACADEMY,educating the sons of the localgentry for almost two hundred years, had become a family-oriented institution in the community.Firm ties continuallydeveloped, with many a boy's heart becoming welded to the school, and prominent among this group was Frank Deacon'14.Frank cameby it naturally, for he was the son of George Hartley Deacon, whotaught mathematics at Germantown Academy for more than fortyyears',founded the Inter-Academy League**,and his interest in theAcademy went far beyond the scope of his professional duties. \nSmall wonder, then, that Frank's affection for the school grewstronger as he grew older, which proved of great value tous,as we shallobserve later. \nThe reason for acquainting you with Frank Deacon is because it washe who induced this writing. It was in the Spring of 1972,following ad-journment of a Trustee's meeting when Frank, musing about the trials ofour relocation exclaimed,\"It must be written so others may know how ithappened. You,Jerry, must write it and call it \"The Miracle of FortWashington'.” \nDuring the early 1950's,on an occasional return to the campus,Irecall being disturbed by the sight of many sons of GermantownAcademy Alumni wearing the colors of the opposing schools. It soonbecame apparent these feelings were shared by others and at Boardmeetings more time was being given to ideas for attracting studentsGrowing concern was evidenced, however, when the following letterwas received: \n*1878 to 1918 \n\"1887 \n3 \nDigitized by the Internet Archivein 2021 with funding fromKahle/Austin Foundation \nhttps://archive.org/details/miracleoffortwaso000unse \nRobert F.Irwin,Esq., \nPresident, \nBoard of Trustees of Germantown Academy \nDear Mr.Irwin: \nIn addition to the business incident to the normal operation ofthe Academy Club,it has been the practice of the Executive Boardof the Academy Club to frequently discuss other topics or problemspertaining to Germantown Academy in general.Foremost amongthese discussions over the past few years have been the problemsof the frequent changes in the position of headmaster since theretirement of Dr.Osbourn, and the increasingly difficult job ofattracting students to fill the primary grades of the School. \nAfter numerous creative sessions, certain possible solutions tothe above problems have crystallized to the point where theAcademy Club Board thought that they should be presented toyou for your perusal and have so instructed me to write youaccordingly. \nThe initial and most revolutionary thought which came to mindwas removal of the School from the present premises to a locationin closer proximity to the area from which the students and pro-spective students originate. This proposal was rejected by us ashaving too many problems financially and too much expecteddissent from the Alumni. \nHowever,it is becoming increasingly obvious that, with the ex-tension of the perimeters of the Greater Philadelphia area, andthe resultant City encroachment on Germantown Academy'spresent location, primary students willfind the \"Old School\"in-creasingly less attractive.Children who begin their education inone school seldom change to another, once their friendships andhabits are cemented into place. Therefore,a definitely progressiveand objective solution must be found,if Germantown Academy isto survive. This becomes even more apparent if we recognize thevery real competition for the same general type students beingactively pressed by Penn Charter and Germantown Friends in thevery same area!
