Having spent half her young  \nlife working in the mill, it was a wonder that Daisy’s nose was still made so sensitive by the tiny flying particles of cotton lint.  \nJanet, who was under one of the machines hastily tying the two ends of a snapped thread, slid out and stood upright, grinning like a fool and mimicking the motion of a sneeze before pretending to cover her ears against the sound.  \nDaisy laughed and shook her head. Her twin sister always made her laugh. However bad the day was, Janet Barlow could see some good in it, or if not the good, then at least a little humour. Daisy didn’t know how other children managed the long days at the mill without a twin of their own to take the edge off things.  \nDaisy’s attention was quickly returned to her work. Her mother, Vera, had seen her beloved girls out of the corner of her eye and quickly shook her head from side to side. Daisy knew her mother was just worried that Mr Baker would see and reprimand the girls or, worse still, dock their already meagre wages. And, of course, there was the ever-present threat of being reported to Mr Wainwright for misbehaving. He was famous for his short  \ntemper and penchant for the arbitrary dismissal of a mill worker without so much as a minute’s hearing.  \nTurning to look at her mother, Daisy gave her a tiny nod to put her mind at rest and turned her eyes back to the loom. In return, Vera smiled at her daughter, so briefly that nobody could have accused her of not getting on with her work. Over the years, the family of three had developed their own system of silent communication in a world which was anything but.  \nDaisy turned her attention back to the shuttle quill she was loading with thread. She needed to be fast for Mr Baker didn’t like the little things taking too much time. Time was money, that’s what Mr Baker always said. Of course, for Daisy and her mother and sister, time was a pittance, for their pay barely kept them alive.  \nDaisy could see that Janet had already moved on from her amusement and was fully absorbed in wiping down. As far as Daisy could tell, it was just about the worst job in the entire mill. The worker, usually the younger children, would have to dart between the two heaviest parts of the powerloom to wipe it down. In its practice, it wasn’t any better or worse than many other jobs in the mill. To Daisy, however, the noise was horrendous. It was nothing compared to the inattentiveness of the man holding the carriage of the loom back on its brakes. Add in the sheer weight of the loom carriages—it made the whole thing more life-threatening.  \nAlthough she gave every appearance of working on her own task, Daisy watched the wiping down like a hawk when Janet was the child sent in todo it. She wanted to be ready to pull on the brakes herself if the man incharge of them let them go too quickly.  \nThe problem was that Janet was small. They were both thirteen years old, but Daisy was tall, and Janet was short and slight, like a tiny fairy. She was still able to take the same awful tasks that were reserved for children. At thirteen, Daisy and Janet were hardly that. No, children were five, six or at  \nthe most seven.
