Michael Brody, Montana State University, United States; Justin Dillon, King’s College London, United Kingdom; Paul Hart, University of Regina, Canada; & Joe Heimlich, Ohio State University, United States \nAbstract \nThe unabashedly messy aspects of the research process are often hidden from published view, and are therefore not available to encourage and instruct. The authors tell specific stories about “messy” research, arranged around: \n• evolving research questions, \n• methodology or methods surprises, \n• problematic answers, and \n• publication dilemmas. \nThese stories are from work amongst diverse categories and frames of inquiry, and are meant to encourage fellow students to persist and problemsolve mid-process. We hope that having real researchers tell their own stories of mucking around the methodologies and ethics of inquiry can encourage others to engage and persist, and can be the beginning of a more process-oriented and perhaps more nuanced conversation that opens active discussion and scrutiny amongst critical friends. \n110 Canadian Journal of Environmental Education, 12, 2007 \nKeywords: environmental education; evolving research questions; methodology surprises; research problems; publication dilemmas \nIntroduction \nThe error spectrum in publishable research, ranging from slight “undetectable” flaw to insurmountable foible, is known to exist, but is seldom acknowledged in print unless such an admission is followed by the victorious tale of how the blemish was erased, overcome, or adeptly sidestepped on the way to a research publication. This is not a new tradition; Figure 1 contains a 50-year-old tongue-in-cheek research glossary (from metallurgical research) of such sidestepping prose. \n\n| Sidestepping R | esearch Prose |\n| --- | --- |\n| Common words and phrases | Their real meanings |\n| It has long been known that… | I haven’t bothered to look up the original reference. |\n| …of great theoretical and practical importance | …interesting to me |\n| While it has not been possible to provide definite answers to these questions… | The experiments didn’t work out, but I figured I could at least get a publication out of it. |\n| Three of the samples were chosen for detailed study… | The results on the others didn’t make sense and were ignored. |\n| Typical results are shown… | The best results are shown. |\n| Presumably at longer times… | I didn’t take time to find out. |\n| These results will be reported at a later date… | I might possibly get around to this sometime. |\n| It is suggested that… It is believed that… It may be that… | I think… |\n| It is generally believed that… | A couple of other guys think so, too. |\n| It might be argued that… | I have such a good answer to this objection that I shall now raise it. |\n| It is clear that mu","cbCairkoa583HIMu","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairkoa583HIMu","pdf",180767,17,"English","# Introduction\n## Error spectrum and sidestepping research prose\n## The purpose: highlight “stubbed toes” in research\n## Origins: research symposium session","[{\"question\":\"Why does the paper focus on the “messy” aspects of research?\",\"answer\":\"Because these complicated parts are usually hidden in published versions, the authors argue they are not available to encourage and instruct students during the research process.\"},{\"question\":\"How do the authors structure the discussion of messy research?\",\"answer\":\"They present stories arranged around evolving research questions, methodology or method surprises, problematic answers, and publication dilemmas.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the main message about failure and success in research?\",\"answer\":\"Research is portrayed as a path rather than a binary of failure/success, with many points that cannot and should not be described only as success or failure.\"}]","The Messy Process of Research - Dilemmas, Process, and Critique | PDF",1792084907,43]
