It is therefore important that the Architect and the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) engineers work in unison to ensure the quality environment. A good design can result in: \n• Healthy and comfortable living \n• Better environmental control \n• Operational efficiency \n• Lower greenhouse gas emissions \n• Increased productivity \nRemember MEP services are one area that makes the difference between comfortable and complaining occupants. \nIn this course, we will focus on “active” MEP services. The course comprises of 10 Chapters: \nCHAPTER – 1 : KNOW YOUR BUILDING \nCHAPTER – 2: HVAC SYSTEMS \nCHAPTER – 3: AIR DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM \nCHAPTER – 4: FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEMS \nCHAPTER – 5: FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS \nCHAPTER – 6: VERTICAL TRANSPORATION \nCHAPTER – 7: PLUMBING SYSTEMS \nCHAPTER – 8: ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS \nCHAPTER – 9: SPECIALTIES / COMMUNICATIONS + SECURITY \nCHAPTER – 10: MEP INTERFACE AND RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES \ni \nThe MEP Design of Building Services – M06-034 \nCHAPTER-1 \nKNOW YOUR BUILDING \nCLASSIFICATION OF BUILDINGS \nBuildings may be classified as low-rise, high-rise, and a number of other categories. \n• Low-rise building is: \n− less than seven (7) stories or 75 ft. from street level. Most model codes adopt this classification which was originally based on the capacity of the firefighting truck ladders to reach the building heights effectively. \n− reached by conventional fire-truck ladders \n• High-rise building: buildings from 7 to 29 stories \n• Super high-rise building: 30 to 50 stories \n• Skyscraper: 51 stories upward \nBUILDING EFFICIENCY FACTORS \nFactors used to evaluate the effectiveness of the building design: \n• Net-to-gross ratio (NGR) \n• Floor-efficiency ratio (FER) \nNet-to-Gross Ratio (NGR) \nNGR = 100 x NFA/GFA \nWhere \n• NFA= net floor area, (ft2) \n• GFA=gross floor area (ft2) \nNFA is the usable floor area that can be used by the occupants, excluding the area taken by stairs, circulation space, elevators, lobbies, structural columns, MEP equipment and shafts. GFA includes the entire constructed floor area. \nFloor-Efficiency Ratio (FER) \nFER is used for office buildings to calculate the rentable space on typical rental floors. \nFER = 100 x (NRA/GFA) \nWhere, \n• NRA = net rentable area (ft2) \n• GFA = Gross floor area (ft2) \nNormally, an FER of 85% is considered an excellent design. \n1 \nThe MEP Design of Building Services – M06-034 \nGEOMETRIC FACTORS \nFactors used to evaluate economics and energy-effectiveness relative to building geometry and form: \n• VSR = volume-to-surface ratio \n• APR = area-to-perimeter ratio \nVolume-to-Surface Ratio \nVSR = V / S \nWhere, \n• V = volume of building (ft3) \n• S = total exterior surface of building (ft2) \nThe volume to surface area ratio of a building is an important factor in determining heat loss and gain. The greater the VSR ratio, the lower will be the heat gain/loss through it. A cost effective energy efficient building will therefore MINIMIZE exterior surfaces (walls and roof) and MAXIMIZE interior volume (floor area x height) . \nArea-to-Perimeter Ratio (APR) \nAPR is the typical floor area divided by the perimeter length of the floor (most upper floors are substantially the same) . \nAPR = A/P \nWhere, \n• A = typical or representative floor area of building (ft2) \n• P = linear dimension of perimeter of a typical or representative floor (ft.) \nThe surface area of the building is a function of the perimeter (aspect ratio) and the building height.
