Here and there, the main street's  \nillumination struggled against dust particles carried by the wind, clouding the air. In the side streets, no lamps had yet been installed, and a faint light escaped from house windows, flickering in the gloom. Occasionally, a car would pass on the new road, usually bearing military license plates, but the sidewalks—too wide and too clean—remained orphaned of pedestrians and street dwellers. The desperate poverty of the young nation's inhabitants, which had only recently broken free from Mother Russia's claws and gained its independence, was almost imperceptible in the landscape of the renewing capital.  \nAs the central city, the seat of government, and the main business center of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat attracted politicians, businessmen, religious and intellectual figures, and the few wealthy citizens of the nation who had made their fortunes selling abandoned Russian military equipment, as well as through bills of sale of virgin gas and oil fields, lands rich in raw materials and minerals, including those destined for construction and urban expansion. Most of the powerful dignitaries positioned themselves in the city center, which was crowded with dozens of ugly concrete buildings, constructed almost simultaneously during the Russian era, in the Russian method—devoid of character, distinction, or grandeur; the eclectic, nondescript, communist practice, serving its narrow purposes, merely  \nproviding shelter for the urbanites, dominated everything except for a very small number of privately owned buildings that served those whose wealth had already accumulated through various dealings with the West. These private structures were surrounded by private courtyards and ornamental gardens. Security was stringent, and only a select few were permitted to approach and reach their doors.  \nIt was already past ten at night when a vehicle of the type ZIL-115, manufactured in Russia's automobile factories, made its way along the darkened traffic artery toward one of those houses in the city's ninth district, and came to a halt near the main gate leading to the house's courtyard. The gate was locked, illuminated by a small lantern. No guard could be seen standing nearby or patrolling the yard. The barking of dogs could be heard from afar, occasionally merged with the howling of jackals. The driver silenced the rumbling engine, opened the door, and leapt out onto the quiet street. Two of his companions who were also seated in the vehicle did likewise.
