Diwali always did that in Poona. Lamps in clay cups lined doorways and low walls, and the smell of ghee drifted along lanes where beggars and merchants had mixed all day, each believing the night would change something.  \nColonel Barry Close listened from the Residency compound as the last rockets sputtered into ash. He had lived long enough in the Deccan to know that celebration and danger were never separate here. One could turn into the other without warning, and sometimes they arrived together.  \nAt first light, he climbed to the flat roof of the Residency with his clerk and two sepoys. The river confluence below, the Sungum, lay calm and pale. Beyond it, the ground opened into fields cut by low walls, mango groves, and scrub that would hide a thousand men until they rose.  \nTwo armies had risen there already.  \nTo the east and north, Jeswunt Rao Holkar ’s camp sprawled like a moving town. Horse lines ran in long, dark rows. Smoke from cookfires drifted low. Men in quilted coats checked girths and tightened rope. They spoke quickly, and their voices were clipped by the knowledge that a day could decide a kingdom.  \nTo the west, closer to the city, Sewdasheo Bhow Bhaskur held Scindia’s force, with the Peshwa’s cavalry and irregulars gathered near him. The banners were bright, and the artillery better placed. Close could see the line of guns, black mouths aimed toward the open ground that separated them from Holkar.  \nHe had been careful, these last days, to learn what he could. He could neither command either prince nor stop the collision.
