It reframes architecture books as inquiries into underlying ideas rather than illustrations, using drawings complemented by two related theoretical texts. The introduction explains how photographs, plans, sections, and diagrams transcribe the complex relationship between spaces and their use, organizing disjunctions among form, movement, programs, and social values. It also positions the work as a reading of the twentieth-century city and the broader theme of love and death.",{"@graph":14,"@context":72},[15,34,55],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/research-report/","Research FOREWORD\n\nBooks of architecture,as opposed to books about architecture, develop their ownexistence and logic. They are not directed at illustrating buildings or cities, but atsearching for the ideas that underlie them.Inevitably, their content is given rhythm bythe turning of pages,by the time and motion this suggests. The books may read assequences, but they do not necessarily imply narratives. They can be theoreticalprojects, abstract endeavours aimed at both exploring the limits of architecturalknowledge and at giving readers access to particular forms of research. \nYet The Manhattan Transcripts were first conceived in the context of live spaces-successive paper spaces (on a wall)that defined a real space (in a room). But theirsequential nature still easily suggested a book.As in those film books in which theillustrations are enlargements of frames from the film, the Transcripts consist offrame-by-frame descriptions of an architectural inquest.By no means do theycomprise a definitive statement;they are a tool-in-the-making,a work-in-progress. \nAlthough other forms of notation were devised in various stages of the totalproject(words, sounds, installations),the Transcripts are composed mainly ofdrawings, for drawings are both key means and limitations of architectural inquiries. But two theoretical texts literally complement them. Both'The Pleasure ofArchitecture'and'Violence of Architecture’¹were written and published during workon the Transcripts and they unavoidably interlock with the present drawings, albeitwith their own logic, for the logic of drawings will always differ from the logic ofwords. The introductory text simply outlines some themes and approaches. \n# INTRODUCTION\n\nThe Manhattan Transcripts differ from most architectural
