Using field investigations of Tibetan temples across China, it analyzes how mandala spatial organization interweaves architecture, landscape, religious meanings, nature, and human movement in landscape  \nINTRODUCTION  \nThe mandala as a Buddhist cosmic model of organizing thespiritual world has received great attention worldwide,especial-ly for its role in Tibetan Buddhist practices and its symbolism inreligious architecture.Surprisingly,among the volumes writtenabout the mandala,few stress the integration of templearchitecture with its surrounding landscape.Emphasizing theintegrative relationship between architecture and landscapebased on field investigations of Tibetan temples throughoutChina,this paper discusses how the mandala.as a cosmicmodel,was utilized to shape the Tibetan Buddhist architectureand the cultural landscape,and served to interweave it withnature,architecture,religious meanings,and man's movements.  \nTibetan Buddhism is a branch of Tantric Buddhism.originallyfrom India.which has been infused with the Ben religion,indigenous to Tibet.This branch emphasizes the path andpractices of the Buddha of enlightenment,and also follows acommon Buddhist theme:humanity is suffering the torments ofbeing caught up in the cycle of death and rebirth;and only theBuddha,with his great wisdom and compassion,has the abilityto help humans transcend and be liberated from this cycle,inorder to reach ultimate enlightenment(Powers,1995.P.208).As a living religion.Tibetan Buddhism is practiced in Tibet.and in its surrounding regions on the Qingzhang are increasing numbersof believers in North America and Western Europe.  \nIn Tibet,every city,town,village,and even every home has itsown temple,which provides a focus for the social and spirituallife of the Tibetan community.Tibet once had over 6000temples.Every important historical event,often linked to areligious revolution,left behind a great temple as an historicalmark.Famous temples were concentrated in Tibet,but manywere also located in the surrounding regions:Gansu,Qinghai,Sichuan,and Yongnan Provinces.Farther off,many famoustemples were located in Inner Mongolia,Beijing,and Chengde.  \nThe wide distribution of Tibetan temples throughout China wasthe result of historical and political factors.During the YanDynasty (1271-1368 AD).the emperors,who were descendentsof Genghis Khan of Mongolia,adopted Tibetan Buddhism asthe national religion of China.During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD),to keep peaceful relations with,and to control Tibetand Mongolia,the emperors encouraged the building of Tibetantemples in these two regions.During the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911 AD).Tibetan Buddhism again became the nationalreligion,imperial Tibetan Buddhist temples were built inBeijing and Chengde (northeast of Beijing)(Figurel).  \nThe contents of the Buddhist cosmic model were explained inthe Abhidharmakosa,an ancient text written by Vasubanhu(fourth or ifth century AD).During primeval times.it wasbelieved that the power of collective actions brought about theuniverse with winds from the four cardinal directions.Thewinds filled the empty space and helped to form the clouds,from which water poured.From the water,hurricanes shapedthe golden earth.In the center of the golden earth rose amountain called Mount Meru.In the middle of the
