The LSAT Sweepstakes\n\nDorothy A.Brown \nSCENE1:THE STAGE IS SET \nThis morning started out as any other morning.I got up,made some coffee, and went downstairs to get my New York Herald.Boy did I love thatnewspaper.Yeah it had its ups and downs—its pseudo-liberalism caused it toget race issues wrong, but who can ever get race issues right? The New YorkHerald was still,in my opinion, the best there was. \nI settled down with my coffee, turned on the television to Good MorningToday!,and picked up my New York Herald.Nothing could have prepared mefor what was to follow.I couldn't believe my eyes. The headline read,\"BlacksOutscore Whites on LSAT:Lawsuit Threatened.” \nI put the newspaper down and took another sip of my coffee.Did I readthat correctly?I rubbed my eyes.I've been accused of an overactiveimagination but this is ridiculous. All of my work over the years on theAdmissions Committee must have finally driven me insane. \nI picked up the newspaper again. The headline had not changed:“Blacks \nOutscore Whites on LSAT:Lawsuit Threatened.\"I continued reading. \nThe LSAC published its scores for the LSAT.The LSAC is the governingbody that implements the LSAT,an exam that virtually all law schoolapplicants take. Those scores showed that for the first time ever, the medianLSAT scores of black applicants were higher than that of white applicants.Blacks'median scores were 150 and whites'were 140.The Chair of the LSAC,Robert Jefferson, reiterated his concern that the LSAT not be used as the soleadmissions or financial aid criteria because it would exclude highly qualifiedbut lower scoring white applicants. \nWhen asked to explain what accounted for the scores,Robert Jeffersonnoted that since he became Chair, the LSAC had adopted several new policiesand procedures and had made changes to the test, including adding newquestions. In addition, the LSAC was a majority minority body for the first timein its history. \nMr.Warren Fetchitt,Executive Director of the Institute for Equal Rights,an institute that had represented several white plaintiffs in recent law schooladmissions cases, was quoted as saying,“We're going to fight this all the wayto the Supreme Court if necessary.” \nThe Journal of Gender,Race &Justice [2:1998] \nRobert Jefferson acknowledged that the LSAC sponsored tutorial programsaround the country for blacks to study for the LSAT.Jefferson also stated thatno prior study had ever conclusively proved a racial or cultural bias, and hedidn't expect this year's test scores to be different.\"How can it be culturally orracially biased when blacks outscore whites but not culturally or racially biasedwhen whites outscore blacks?\"he asked. \nMr.Fetchitt responded that such allegations were ridiculous. To make hispoint he referred to some of the questions asked on the most recent LSAT: \nFred is short, white and bald, but not smart.People who are short andwhite are not popular.Popular people are either black men or whitemen with money.White women like to meet anyone popular. \nIf the statements above are true which of the following statementsmust also be true? \n1.White women like to meet black men. \n2.Fred is popular. \n3.Fred has money. \n4.Fred is someone white women would like to meet. \n\"That's playing on stereotypes!”Mr.Fetchitt continued,\"I can't believethe LSAC passes this garbage off as science.” \nThe article continued on to discuss the potential for litigation as well aswhat various law school admissions officers and deans from around thecountry would do in response to these statistics.Interestingly, there were manyofficials interviewed but no one made any predictions.I was curious aboutwhat my law school would do,but no matter what course of action theydecided upon,it was going to be fun watching! \nBecause it was Sunday,I couldn't talk to any of my colleagues.I hadnever so eagerly anticipated going to school.I had just been talking about thisissue at a faculty brown-bag lunch a couple of weeks ago.How timely! \n## SCENE 2:THEDIALOGUE\n\nWhen I","cbCaib5uumxIIeUa","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaib5uumxIIeUa","pdf",277454,17,"English","# The LSAT Sweepstakes\n##
