effortat science fiction, was written in 1949,just before thestart of the sea narrative that became The CaineMutiny.I intended it as a mirror satire of nuclearconfrontation. At the time, the Soviet Union had notyet exploded an atomic weapon, nor were scientistscertain that a hydrogen bomb(then called a \"hellbomb”)would work.In retrospect, the tale hasproven too prophetic for comfort. \nMeanwhile the moon voyage,as a literaryform, approaches total eclipse. In a year or two-pos-sibly even before the present volume sees the light-itmay be killed by newspaper pictures and stories ofRussians or Americans treading on actual moon rub-ble.Eighteen years ago,a moon voyage tale was afantasy. That is how fast the twentieth century is bull-dozing away old fields of dreams. \nStorytellers have been writing about moonjourneys for thousands of years.A charming book onthe subject that I read-by chance,Marjorie Nicolson'sVoyages to the Moon, spurred me to try the form.Themoon trip can be a romantic adventure,a socialsatire,or a utopian sermon.Mine is a mixture ofthese.Lomokome in Hebrew means Utopia or No-where.The novel starts in the dry vein of a Defoehoax, and gradually slips into the mirror satire ofReasonable War,and the modest proposal of DeathDay.It dodges the problem of propulsion,as all themoon voyages do.My pseudo-solution resembles that \nof H.G.Wells in First Men in the Moon, perhaps thebest of the fictional journeys. \nEssentially this tale derives from both AModest Proposal and the chapter in Erewhon on musi-cal banks. It was planned at first to be as long as Ere-whon,scanning all postwar society with lunar parodyand mirroring.I was much under the spell of SamuelButler, that prince of English prose. This brieferwork, centered on the atomic war theme, was theoutcome. It was virtually the only time one of myliterary undertakings contracted instead of expand-ing.I wish it would happen more often.Perhapsreaders do,too. \nScanning this tale again in the decade ofGemini,Surveyor, missile crises, and Viet Nam,I amsobered by the speed with which truth is overtakingmy grim fiction. But at least we are still here, stillseeking a way out,and-as I write this-still with alittle time left. \nHERMAN WoUK \nWashington \n27 May 1967","cbCaidIrRHlcjdpx","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidIrRHlcjdpx","pdf",4511360,132,"English","# Preface to the Paperback
