The text explains the daily Mass context, the spiritual union of the faithful with the priest and Christ, and the greeting exchange between priest and congregation. Mass,¹it is fitting that we continue to meditate upon the HolySacrifice of the Mass in order that this spiritual exercise may becomemore beneficial to our spiritual lives. This daily union of ourselves withthe priest in offering up the Holy Sacrifice really means the uniting ofourselves with Christ Himself in the renewal of the holocaust ofHimself to His Father.\"Now the sacrifice of the New Law signifiesthat supreme worship by which the supreme offerer himself, who isChrist, and in union with him all the members of the Mystical Body, pay God the honor and reverence that are due him.\"2 \nThe“Mass of the Faithful”,the sacrificial part of the Mass, beginswith an exchange of greetings between the priest and the congregation. The priest kisses the altar,a symbol of Christ the Cornerstone,³andturns toward the people and says,“The Lord be with you.”This prayer-ful greeting is returned by the people through the Mass-server whoreplies,“And with thy spirit.”The priest symbolically greets Christwhen he kisses the altar and then turns and wishes Christ's blessingupon the people;the people wish the same blessing to the priest.Thismutual exchange of greetings expresses the love and respect of one forthe other, fellow members of the Mystical Body of Christ. This reciprocalgreeting is made several times during the Mass, and is especiallyappropriate at the beginning of this act of sacrifice,a liturgical actof the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ. When the priest turnsagain to face the altar,he says aloud,“Let us pray,”thus inviting allpresent io join with him in the prayers that follow, the offertory prayers. \nThe first of these prayers is the so-called Offertory chant, whichthe priest recites while standing in the middle of the altar with his handsfolded before his breast. Many authorities of the liturgy think thatthis chant is the antiphon that preceded a psalm that the choirused to sing at this point of the Mass. These authorities say that inthe early days of the Church, the bread and wine for the sacrifice, \n1Cf.Canon 595,No.1,n.1.2Pope Pius XII,Mediator Dei.8Cf.Matt.21,42. \nas well as other gifts for the priest's support, were brought to the altarby the people in solemn procession.During this procession of the peoplebringing their gifts to the altar, the choir sang a psalm with anantiphon.Such a practice as the offertory processsion has not been inuse for many centuries, but there is still a reminder of this processionin the antiphon which is retained in the Mass as the Offertory chant. \nThe offertory chant, like the Introit and the Gradual,is properto the Mass of the day and continues the theme of the Mass as introducedby the Introit. This chant
