A ritual climb and silent forest journey turns into a hunt by colonial men with rifles. Forced to flee, survivors plunge into the sea as many perish, while one recalled phrase—“MANUIA TE MAHEKE”—becomes a lingering question. The story closes on a reflection of ocean heritage and sacred memory.","MANUIA TE MAHEKE THE LITTLE SHOOTING STAR  \nChrismaela MANUHAAPAI  \nEnglish Fiction  \nThe Little Shooting Star  \nThis is a vision born during a period of lucid dreaming in late 2023. In that fleeting moment, I encountered a frail little girl who haunted my thoughts . Her sudden appearance and the flashbacks—what seemed to be glimpses of her short life—compelled me to share or rather describe what I saw .  \nLet me reassure you—I dream just like everyone else . But every time I say :\"It's weird but there are people in my dreams that I've never seen in my life\" no one believes me. And so, I dedicate this story to that little shooting star who appeared to me just like her nickname suggests . That of a glimmering spark dancing above the boundless ocean swallowed  \nby the embrace of darkness .  \nTHE LITTLE SHOOTING STAR  \nCrédits images : Cover and Images, page 3 by IA Image page 4 from Google  \nChrismaela MANUHAAPAI  \nEnglish  \nMATA-UTU, HAHAKE, Wallis et Futuna  \nCopyright © 2025, Chrismaela MANUHAAPAI  \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)  \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. When I looked down, I saw my thin arms, my skin a warm chocolate brown. My clothes were made of leaves, tied together with vines.  \nI didn't know how I got there but I felt drawn to a place—a ceremony where my entire tribe with Melanesian features, had gathered.  \nAs I approached, a woman with a maternal demeanor came toward me. In her hands, she held a small bowl filled with white paint. Without hesitation I dipped my fingers into the mixture and traced lines on my cheeks following what seemed to be a custom.  \nAll around me, faces were decorated with white symbols. It was beautiful and mysterious like a language I didn't understand but somehow felt connected to.  \nSoon, the women and children began to climb a mountain, using thick vines as ropes. I followed them amazed by how quickly and quietly they moved. After reaching the top we entered a dense forest so green and lush it felt like a secret garden. But something was strange—there were no sounds. No birds singing, no animals rustling. Just silence.  \nThis journey, which I had thought to be a simple ritual walk, suddenly took a tragic turn. As the sun dipped lower, I realized the true reason for our movement: we were being hunted. My people, like prey, were pursued by pale-faced men armed to the teeth.  \nBehind us, through the tall fir trees, I saw about ten pale-skinned men with colonial-style clothes and powder rifles. Fear spread through our group like wildfire. We scattered like ants, desperate to escape. My heart pounded so loudly I thought they might hear it. I knew, deep down that if they caught us they wouldn't spare anyone. They would kill us all.  \nThat terrifying thought gave me the strength to run faster than I ever had before.  \nI found myself among people I had never seen before, yet I felt an undeniable connection to them. We were bound together by a shared fate: we were being hunted by death itself and our only hope of survival was to run as far as we could. After escaping through the forest, we arrived atthe edge of a towering cliff.  \nBehind us, gunshots rang out and the sound of branches snapping grew closer just meters away. With no hesitation we all leapt into the sea.  \nWe believed the sea was our only salvation. Desperate and driven by hope we swam toward the endless expanse of blue, hoping to glimpse another land on the horizon.  \nMany perished in the struggle—the babies first, followed by women and children claimed by the relentless waves. When my turn came, I was thrown into the air becoming an unwilling spectator to this tragic scene that f","cbCaifFalrBzLEfM","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifFalrBzLEfM","pdf",614017,11,"English","en",105,"# The Little Shooting Star\n## A dream that becomes a life\n## From ceremony to pursuit\n## Escape, the sea, and the remembered phrase\n## Ocean heritage and sacred memory","[{\"question\":\"What triggers the narrator’s story in the beginning?\",\"answer\":\"The narrator describes a vision born during late-2023 lucid dreaming, when a frail little girl’s presence suddenly appears and imprints flashbacks of her short life.\"},{\"question\":\"What happens after the narrator joins the ceremony and climb?\",\"answer\":\"The journey shifts from a ritual walk to a frantic escape when the narrator realizes their group is being hunted by armed men.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the significance of the phrase “MANUIA TE MAHEKE” in the story?\",\"answer\":\"The leader shouts it during the survivors’ approach to shore;
