MISTAKE\n\nRose raced up the sloping yard to the farmhouse at topspeed. She kicked off her wellingtons, ran down the hall, andskidded into the kitchen door with a bang \nPeople usually open doors first,Rose,'said Dad througha mouthful of chips. \n'She's probably lost her teddy,'added Robert, and theyboth laughed.Sometimes Rose didn't like her dad and herbig brother at all,and she was just about to tell them sowhen she felt a hand on her shoulder;it was Mum. \n'What's the rush,Rosie Posie?'she said.'I saw you tearingup the yard like a rabbit.' \nMum's face was a whole nest of wrinkles, but her darkeyes were as bright and alive as a robin's. \n\"Trixie's in the barn,'Rose told her,I think she's havingher puppies!' \n'Is she now!'Mum grinned.Trixie's pups were famous formiles around as the best sheepdogs in the county, and Mumwas just as excited as Rose was about the new litter.'Well,we'd better go an check on her!'said Mum. \n'Can we have your chips then?'Dad and Robert calledafter them.Mum rolled her eyes. \n'Those boys!'she said.'What are they like?' \nMum collected the puppy bag from the hall cupboard.Inside was a lantern in case the birth lasted into the nightand a medical kit to help Trixie or her pups if the birth was \nTHE LITTLE MISTAKE \na difficult one. \n'Don't know why I bother taking it though,'Mumlaughed.\"Trixie never needs help! \nMum and Rose slipped quietly in through the barn doorand closed it behind them. The white flash on Trixie's noseshowed in the dim light. She was lying on the floor, whereshe had swirled the hay into a kind of nest. \n'How many pups d'you think she'll have this time?'Roseasked. \n'She's old now,so maybe only three or four,'said Mum.'But one of them could still be a champion! \nSome of Trixie's pups had won prizes at the county sheepdog trials. But as this would be her last litter,Mum hadfound an extra special mate for her,a fine collie dog calledBullet.Mum and Rose had high hopes for the puppies. \nTrixie wagged her tail weakly and licked Mum's hand, but then lay still.Every few seconds she gave a little gruntas her tummy muscles tightened to help squeeze thepuppies out. \n'Won't be long now,'said Mum.'She must have got to thebarn just in time!' \nRose and Mum stroked Trixie's head and comforted herduring her contractions, expecting any minute to see thefirst little wet bundle of puppy appear from Trixie's bottom. \nTHE LITTLE MISTAKE \nBut no puppies came.Blackbirds sang their last songsin the spring dusk and it grew dark;and Rose lit the gaslantern, but still no puppies came. \nTrixie began to look very tired. \n'Poor old girl,'said Mum,lets see what's happening, shall we?' \nMum had helped with hundreds of litters of puppies. The vet always said she knew more about dogs giving birththan he did.She put a surgical glove on her right hand andvery gently felt inside Trixie.Rose held a torch to give herextra light. \n'Oh dear'said Mum,'no wonder you’ve had so muchtrouble,Trix. These pups are huge. \nMum pulled out one pup and then another.Rose didn'twant to look at them. She was glad Mum put the bodiesstraight behind the bale where Trixie wouldn't see them.Rose bit her lip.She knew she had to be brave.Crying nowwouldn't help. \n'There's just one more to come,'said Mum.'But it's evenbigger.I’m going to have to pull hard.Keep the torch steadynow,Rose. \nMum got hold of the pup and the next time Trixie had acontraction, she pulled.Trixie seemed to know that Mumwas trying to help and put every bit of strength she had leftinto pushing. \nTHE LITTLE MISTAKE \n'Come on,Trix!Mum said. \nThen there was a slurping sound, and it was over.Trixiewent limp,Mum
