Chapter 1 explains what light is within the electromagnetic spectrum, including the 380–780 nm wavelength range and how cones and rods affect daytime color versus night grayscale perception. It introduces the melanopic effect and how blue light suppresses melatonin to influence circadian rhythm. Basic parameters such as luminous flux, luminous intensity, illuminance, luminance, and related measurement concepts are presented alongside key quality criteria and glare considerations.",{"@graph":69,"@context":122},[70,84,105],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":30,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/technology/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/the-lighting-handbook-chapter-1-lighting-technology/640148/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/the-lighting-handbook-chapter-1-lighting-technology/640148.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"Liam","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-26","2026-10-22",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":8},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",{"@type":106,"mainEntity":107},"FAQPage",[108,114,118],{"name":109,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":111},"What part of the electromagnetic spectrum is considered light in this handbook?","Question",{"text":112,"@type":113},"Light is defined as that part of the electromagnetic spectrum perceived by the eyes, with a wavelength range between 380 and 780 nm.","Answer",{"name":115,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":116},"How does the melanopic effect relate to melatonin and sleep?",{"text":117,"@type":113},"Photosensitive ganglion cells respond to blue light and suppress the sleep hormone melatonin at night, supporting healthy circadian rhythm and wake-sleep behavior.",{"name":119,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":120},"Which basic lighting parameters are introduced in Chapter 1?",{"text":121,"@type":113},"The chapter covers luminous flux, luminous intensity, illuminance, and luminance, including their common units and key relationships used for lighting evaluation.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":83,"og:type":124,"og:title":65,"og:site_name":95,"og:description":67},"article",{"robots":126,"canonical":83},"index,follow",{"doc_id":128,"site_id":62},640148,1793029550,{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":131},{"doc_id":128,"user_id":132,"nickname":92,"user_avatar":133,"doc_module":4,"category_id":29,"category_name":30,"doc_title":65,"doc_description":67,"doc_content":134,"file_id":135,"file_url":136,"file_type":137,"file_size":138,"view_count":8,"is_deleted":4,"is_public":8,"is_downloadable":8,"audit_status":8,"page_count":139,"language":140,"language_code":63,"site_id":62,"html_lang":63,"table_of_contents":141,"faqs":142,"seo_title":143,"seo_description":67,"update_tm":144,"read_time":145},8796095461564,"https://ap-avatar.wpscdn.com/davatar_155a257f0dc6eb9ab79c44ca47cae57d","The Lighting Handbook \nYour concise reference book \nChapter 1 \nLighting technology \nChapter 2 \nStandard values for indoor and outdoor lighting \nBased on the new European standards \nChapter 3 \nLighting application \nChapter 4 Technology \nChapter 5 Lamps \nChapter 6 \nLighting control and control gear \nChapter 7 \nEmergency lighting \nChapter 8 \nTechnology and tables \nChapter 9 Design tools \nImprint \nFor questions and suggestions on \n“The Lighting Handbook” \nZumtobel Lighting GmbH Schweizer Strasse 30 \nPostfach 72 \n6851 Dornbirn, AUSTRIA T +43/(0)5572/390-0 \ninfo@zumtobel.info \n6th edition: April 2018 \n1 \nChapter 1 \nLighting technology \nWhat is light? 6 \nWhat does the human eye see? 7 \nHuman Centric Lighting 8 \nLight has a triple effect 8 \nBasic parameters used in lighting 10 \nLuminous flux 11 \nLuminous intensity 11 \nIlluminance 11 \nLuminance 11 \nQuality characteristics of lighting \nThe right light – traditional and new quality criteria 12 \nIlluminance – definition of terminology 12 \nGlare – glare limitation 14 \nThe UGR method 15 \nIlluminance levels on ceilings and walls 17 \nSpatial illumination 17 \nLight colour 18 \nColour rendering 18 \nMeasuring illuminance 19 Outdoor lighting 20 Types of lighting 22 Lighting concepts 24 Energy efficiency in buildings 26 \n6 \nWhat is light? \nLight is that part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is perceived by our eyes. The wavelength range is between 380 and 780 nm. The cones come on during the day and we see colours, whereas at night the rods take over and we only see shades of grey. \nWhat is the melanopic effect of light? \nThe retina also contains photosensitive ganglion cells. These are sensitive to blue light and suppress the sleep hormone melatonin at night. Melatonin is responsible for a good sleep at night. Suppressing melatonin in the morning helps keep you awake during the day. This means that the right light controls the circadian rhythm thus a healthy waking and sleeping behaviour. \nWhat is light?
