collapse of Com-munism—the socia and ec-onomic system upon whichthe Soviet Union was based.Modern Communism wasborn in the writings of KarlMarx (1818-83),a Germanthinker.Marx lived in anage of dirty,smoke-filledfactories,child labor,six-day workweeks, and wide-spread poverty. \nThe injustice of theseconditions outraged MarxHe believed that they couldonly get worse, that the rich revolt and establish acommunist society—one inwhich everyone wouldshare the wealth equallyMarx's ideas attractedmany followers. They calledthemselves Marxists,orCommunists. \nCommunism spread beyondthe borders of the SovietUnion. Many of the coun-tries of Eastern Europe be-came part of a Communistempire ruled from Moscow. The Soviet Union emergedas a world superpower witha huge army, navy, and airforce and a mission-tospread Communismthroughout the world. \n## The Cold War\n\nThe shape of the worldfrom 1945 to the late 1980swas shaped by a strugglebetween capitalist nations, led by the U.S.,and Com-munist nations, led by theSoviet Union. This strugglefor the hearts and minds ofthe world is known as TheCold War. \n## Vladimir Lenin\n\nThe leader of the Rus-sian Communists was Vla-dimir Lenin(1970-1924).In1917,after the RussianRevolution,Lenin and hisfollowers established theworld's first Communistgovernment.Lenin prom-ised the Russian people anew era of freedom U.S.andthe Soviet Union built upvast stockpiles of nuclearweapons and more thanonce the world was broughtclose to nuclear war. \nThe new nation Leninfounded in 1922 was calledthe Soviet Union-a unionof republics (similar to U.S.states)bound together byCommunist ideals. \nAt the height of the ColdWar Soviet leader NikitaKhruschev told the U.S.,\"We will bury you,\"mean-ing that Communism woulddestroy capitalism. \nWhat Lenin and his suc-cessors actually estab-lished was not a democracy, but a Communist dictator-ship.No other political par-ties were allowed.Therewas no freedom of the
