Newcomen: \nTONIGHT,American Newcomen does honor to Birming-ham-Southern College. That great exponent of the highcapability of free man in a free nation was founded inI856 by the Methodist Church. It was designed to be an institu-tion committed to the education of men to whom the things of theheart are at least as important as the cultivation of the intellect;dedicated in short to all those enduring values of our Judeo-Christian civilization that are most readily drawn out by a church-related college. \nWithin five years of its foundation, with serene dignity andunfailing purpose, this infant College endured the vicissitudes ofCivil War and Reconstruction;and, guided by some seventeenpresidents, with that same dignity and purpose it has surmounteda long series of crises and disappointments, and throughout itslong history,it has maintained its dedication to the ideals of ourfree society.Birmingham-Southern College has done much tovalidate the proposition that those ideals are best nurtured in themilieu of a small, but unqualifiedly excellent, liberal arts college. \nPerhaps it may not be amiss to pause for a moment to note theenduring touch of two or three of the great men of the past whocontributed importantly to the development of Birmingham-Southern College into the position of outstanding leadership in itsfeld that it holds today. \nDuring the critical years of World War I,Charles AndrewRush,as President of Southern University, brilliantly surmountedthe tensions and the critical problems of those years.PresidentRush,an alumnus and a trustee for many years, was the grandsonof Bishop James O.Andrew who was a founder-trustee,and hisfather also had served as a trustee. He is remembered happily \nalso as the father of Rosalind Rush Davison of Opelika, who is amost effective trustee of the College. Her family has providedoutstanding trustees now for four generations. \nThe College was moved from Greensboro and consolidatedwith Birmingham College in May I9I8,under the leadership ofCullen C.Daniel,a dedicated minister of the Methodist Church;a distinguished educator;and the father of Birmingham's ownKenneth Daniel, the outstanding President of American CastIron Pipe Company.Succeeding Mr.Daniel,Dr.Guy E.Snavelyserved as President of the College for an initial term of sixteenyears, during which unprecedented strides forward were madeon every front;and again for a second term after the Presidencyof George R.Stuart,Jr.,and prior to the election in ","cbCaiojUeGcyzNZO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiojUeGcyzNZO","pdf",2297689,34,"English","# Introduction
