This is Sleepy Hollow, the setting of one of the most famous ghost stories ever written by an American. In it, a nervous schoolteacher named Ichabod Crane rides home one dark night and meets a mysterious figure known as the Headless Horseman. People have been passing that spooky tale around for more than two hundred years!
The man who dreamed up that shadowy rider was a writer named Washington
Irving, born in New York City in 1783. He published "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" in 1820, back when the United States was still a very young country. At the time, most people believed only European writers could produce great books, so Irving set out to prove them wrong. He became oneof the first American authors to be widely read and admired across the ocean in Europe.
Being admired in Europe was a huge deal, and Irving got there partly by borrowing old folktales and giving them an American home. The idea of a headless rider had appeared in stories from Germany and other lands for centuries before he wrote. What Irving did was plant that ghostly legend in a real Dutch farming village in New York, complete with pumpkin fields and covered bridges. By mixing spooky folklore with everyday American life, he created something that felt both familiar and thrillingly new.
That real Dutch village was no invention, because Sleepy Hollow is an actual town in New York that you can visit today. Once known as North Tarrytown, the community voted to rename itself Sleepy Hollow in 1996 to celebrate its famous story. Each fall, visitors flood in to see the old Dutch church, the winding roads, and the nearby cemetery where Irving himself is buried. The town leans right into its legend, decorating with jack-o'-lanterns and welcoming crowds who love a good scare.
Those autumn crowds are proof that a single tale can shape a whole town's identity for generations. Irving's story has also galloped into movies, cartoons, and books, keeping the Headless Horseman alive long after its author. Did you know Irving is often credited with helping popularize the nickname "Gotham" for New York City? So the same writer who gave us a headless rider also handed Batman's hometown one of its most famous names!
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Name:

| Solve each problem.
Use the article to answer the question.
1) What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.
