It traces timing and Gospel focus, emphasizing that the meal is not merely a date problem but a sign of deliverance through Jesus’ intercession. aboutJesus'words of comfort and instruc-tion to His twelve friends at their lastsupper together, the night before Heleft them to suffer and die.It was per-fectly natural that He should be eatingwith them in Jerusalem at that timeof year. The time was Spring, the sea-son of the Passover or great Jewishfeast of remembrance. The chief thingthe people called to mind on this oc-casion was the deliverance of Israel byher God,the Lord, centuries earlier(13 centuries is about as close as wecan come). \nLAST SUPPER IS NEW PASCH \n(2)From the Gospel we cannotknow the exact year of Jesus'cruci-fixion.The best conclusion is that OurLord’s last earthly Passover came inearly April of 30 A.D.This date isbased on what little the Gospel tellsus about the length of Jesus'life, andcalendar indications which tell us inwhat year the fourteenth day of Nis.san, the day of Passover, fell on Fri-day.Other years that have been sug-gested are:33,29,31,28 and 32. \n(3)This variety of opinions,how-ever,tells us something importantabout the Gospel.Matthew,Mark,Luke and John—four inspired writers—had no interest in such matters asdates, but they did have a burning in-terest in how this Passover was thelast and perfect one. They did carethat it was a sign of the deliverancethat Jesus would be interceding for,at the Father's right hand, for as longas men had need of it. \n(4)The Gospel account is full ofunsolved problems of detail about theLast Supper. For instance, the meal isnowhere described in so many wordsas being a Jewish Passover supper.Allthe emphasis is on the fact that it isa new Pasch(a word taken from theGreek way to say the Hebrew pesach, which means a sparing or exemption). We must conclude that the only fit-ting time for Jesus to celebrate thisnew and perfect remembrance mealwas on the occasion of the old mealthat had pointed to it for so long. \nTHIS SUPPER HAS FINALITY \nIT WAS A FAMILY MEAL \n(7)No,Jesus'meaning goes muchdeeper than that.He is saying thatthis supper has a certain finality aboutit. It is as closely related to the com-ing of God’s kingdom as a sign is re-lated to what it stands for.Like aprophet of old,Jesus utters a solemnvow that He will touch no food untilsomething very important happens.Meanwhile,He will drink of this cupand eat of this bread to hasten theevent which He foretells—the comingof the kingdom. \n(5)“When the hour had come,”writes Saint Luke,\"He took His placeon a couch, and so did the Apostles.'It has been My heart's desire,'Hesaid to them,'to eat this paschal sup-per with you before I suffer.I tell you,I shall not eat it again till it is ful-filled in the kingdom of God.'”(Luke \n22:15-16.) \n(6)See how anxious Jesus is thatthis celebration should take placeamong them as a family group.EvenJudas, the black sheep of the\"littleflock”(Luke 12:32),is there.Notice, too, the relation between the joyouscelebration and the bitter death thatwill follow it.This is somewhat likethe happy Thanksgiving dinner of acondemned man with his family onthe night before he is to be hanged.Inthe Gospel case, however, the relationbetween the two events is not just oneof before-and-after,or even of a gath-ering on the eve of tragedy, arrangedto provide a happy memory for familyand friends. \n(8)Now take time out to read theGospel account of the Last Supper, for it is almost useless to go on explor-ing this topic without this background.See Luke's account(22:7-38)andMatthew's account(26:20-29)asprinted in HI-TIME at the end of thisarticle.(Other references to look upare Mark 14:12-25 and I Corinthians \n11:23-24.)
