Here I outline the scale of the problem, the causes, and  \nsome solutions to it, individual and collective. This problem will, I think, shock you and may even scare you, especially when I tell you about the harmful effects of so-called endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which can affect pretty much every single process in the body by mimicking the effects of natural hormones such as estrogen. These chemicals can make you fat and infertile, and they can give you cancer, and what’s worse—they’re everywhere. But it’s always my intention when I write about our current health crisis to offer simple, practical solutions. Yes, the problem is bad—very bad—but there are things you, as a man, can do about it, and things women can do, too. Lifestyle alterations like buying organic food or even cultivating your own can hugely reduce the burden of exposure to chemicals like pesticides, benefitting you and your loved ones.  \nBut there are aspects of this problem that are, as far as I’m concerned, insoluble under our current political dispensation. I don’t just mean left or right, either, although I think the left generally makes things far, far worse for men than the right does. I’m talking about the broader liberal democratic system within which all parties, and within which we, exist.  \nUnlike so many books on the problem (such as Richard Reeves’s bestseller Of Boys and Men1 ) , this book will not focus on factors like the growth of feminism, equality in the workplace, and a hostile, largely female-led media and academy that trade in ridiculous notions like “toxic masculinity” and villainize boys and men when they pursue their inborn masculine impulses. These considerations matter, of course, and will be touched on and discussed at various points, but they are surface-level manifestations of a deeper problem. I’m not going to suggest we need a male-advocacy movement or a different kind of equality in the workplace or life. Being nicer to men at work and valuing their contribution as much as the contributions of the girlbosses in HR is not the solution for anything, not really.
