Stevens and introduced by Governor Lane Dwinell. The text opens with acknowledgements and publication details, then describes the Webster family’s colonial origins in Kingston, Ebenezer Webster’s upbringing, and his early escape from harsh apprenticeship. has grown immeasurably -will be happy as I am to find inthis booklet a fitting tribute to the parentage and the home which producedour greatest son. \nHistory may be much more than the lives of outstanding men andwomen,no matter how far they tower above their contemporaries. For us,theinspiring past lives again most vividly when we are given glimpses of thehuman conditions……the family background, the daily way of iife, thetroubled times which so often seem to bring forth tall figures to meetthe challenges of history and embody the qualities we look for in those wholead us forward. \nDaniel Webster, like mny other truly great men, will always bea controversial subject for latterday biographers. But whatever his \nfailings,he never flagged in his devotion to the ideals of liberty, unitedloyalty to the Constitution and rugged individual self-respect.Theseare essentially American ideals, forged in a crucible of freedom at thecost of almost incredible sacrifices. When Webster himself turned his \nback on the Presidency and popular acclaim to insist, grimly and with all hismatchless eloquence,\"The Union must be preserved,\"he was doing what he couldto repay the great debt he owed to a heritage and a tradition which lessermen either lacked or ignored. \nMiss Stevens,I believe, has done well to help us understand whatthat heritage and that tradition should mean to New Hampshire and all Americatoday. \n人J_…Lane DwinellGovernor of New Hampshire \nABOUT twenty miles inland from the coast of New Hamp-shire,in a small town called Kingston, there lived in theearly Colonial days the family of Ebenezer Webster.TheWebsters were of Scotch-English descent, blue eyed,of verylight complexion with heavy sandy colored hair.Mr.Websterfrom time to time, was active in Indian warfare. His eldestson named Ebenezer, wooed and won for his wife,SusannaBatchelder, the great, great granddaughter.of the Rev.StephenBachiler,1 the first settled minister in the Province of NewHampshire. She was a girl of uncommon strength of characterand ability and had inherited from her famous ancestor aswarthy, dark complexion and piercing black eyes. She becamethe mother of eight children. Her first son,Ebenezer, born in1739,at Kingston,N.H.was to become the father of one ofAmerica's greatest statesmen and orators,Daniel Webster. \nFollowing the custom of those days in large families,Mr.Webster had little Eben\"bound out\"at an early age.Hismaster proved to be a tyrant and the boy ran away from himat the age of fourteen and went to live in the home of Col.Ebenezer Stevens,²also of Kingston. \nColonel Stevens was a very fine and well to do gentleman.Hetook a great liking to the boy and kept him as his own until hebecame eighteen years of age.Eben then enlisted and left withthe famous“Rogers Rangers”to fight the French and Indiansunder the British flag. This company of Rangers consisted ofsome of the boldest and most rugged men of New England.Among their numbers were John Stark and Israel Putnam, whoin later years, became famous generals in the Revolution","cbCaikNQCKbm0cqb","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikNQCKbm0cqb","pdf",2066596,38,"English","#
