Approach\n\nThe English Lakes lie in three Counties—Cumberland,Westmorland and part of Lancashire. The Lake District proper is confined to an areasouth of Skiddaw and Saddleback, and north of theFurness Fells which are situated between Winder-mere and Coniston.A line from Coniston toWast Water,Ennerdale,Crummock,Loweswaterand Bassenthwaite is roughly the western boundary, and another line from Ullswater and Hawes Waterback to Windermere forms the eastern border. \nWithin these limits one is in close proximity tothe lakes, but many take the Lake District to referto the entire region west of the A6 road from Kendalto Penrith and Carlisle, south of a line from Penrithto Cockermouth, and with a western boundary atMorecambe Bay and the Irish Sea. \nThe southern approach to the Lakes is usuallyby way of Kendal,on which a number of roadsconverge. The town of Kendal, itself steeped inhistory, also offers attractive but wholly urbanriverside scenery.Kendal Castle is now in ruins. It was here that Catherine Parr was born,and600 years ago Flemish refugees settled in Kendal, introducing the thriving industry in woollens and'Kendal green buckram’. \nFrom Kendal the A591 leads to Windermere. The town is only just over 100 years old, havingbeen built with the coming of the railway. It islinked with Bowness,of earlier origin, which issituafed on the shores of Lake Windermere.Herethe 15th century church of St.Martin contains thearms of the ancestors of George Washington. \nThe picture opposite shows the mile wide and ten mile long lake of Windermere,Westmorland. The bluewaters of England's largest lake,as well as reflecting their lovely surroundings, are usually the scene ofmuch boating activity.Bowness-on-Windermere is the headquarters of the Royal Windermere YachtClub and from the pier steamers ply up and down the lake at all times during the summer. \n# Kirkstone Pass\n\nAbove Bowness, the A592,which has followedthe eastern shore of Lake Windermere, crosses theA591 outside the town of Windermere and proceedsdirectly north between the hills formed by thevalley of the Trout Beck. The road passes throughthe quaint old village of Troutbeck where streamsrun in the streets.Beyond Town Head, the roadbegins to leave the valley and to climb the westernslopes.Away to the right, the high hills of Yoke,Ill Bell,Froswick and High Street are to be seen ina continuous range. After another three miles, the road climbs very steeply until it joins the oldroad from Ambleside at the southern entrance tothe Kirkstone Pass, where one of the highest-situatedinns in England is to be found.Near the summit of the Pass,1,490 feet above \nsea level is the Kirk Stone, alleged to mark the one-time meeting place of Covenanters. The road nowdescends rapidly and skirts the eastern shore of thelittle lake called Brothers'Water, and then crossesthe Pasture Beck by a bridge near the hamlet ofLow Hartsop, after which it bears left, passing theentrance to the romantic glen called Deepdale thatpenetrates the mountains in a south-westerlydirection. \nFollowing the course of the Goldrill Beck,theA592 enters Patterdale, situated at the head ofUllswater, which, with nearby Glenridding,is anexcellent centre for excursions on the magnificentseven mile long ","cbCaiqoVgGrV45n6","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqoVgGrV45n6","pdf",3773023,36,"English","# The Southern Approach\n#
