Kurds have lived in theMiddle East for more than \n4,000 years.Historiansbelieve they are related to theancient Persians. \n●The most famous Kurdin history is Saladin (drawingbelow),a famous Muslimgeneral who lived between1138 and 1193.At the timeSaladin lived,Muslimswere divided between twocaliphates,or governments,by caliphs (rulersclaiming tobe successors to Muhammad, the founder of Islam).Thecompeting caliphates were the \nFatimids,who ruled from Egypt, and the Abassids, who ruledfrom Baghdad in what is nowIraq.Saladin ended the Fatimiddynasty, establishing oneMuslim empire from Spain tothe borders of India. \n●A continued irritant to thisMuslim empire, however, wereEuropean Christian forces from \nthe First Crusade \n(1095-99)and the \nSecond Crusade \n(1147-49).The \ncrusaders had \nestablished their rule in \nJerusalem and in other \nparts of what is now \nIsrael and Lebanon. \nAfter Saladin united \nthe two caliphates,he \nled Muslim armies to \nfight the Christian armies thatoccupied Jerusalem. In 1187,Saladin's armies defeated thecrusaders at theBattle ofHattin. The defeat caused analarm throughout Europe.ThreeChristian rulers,Richard I ofEngland,PhilipⅡ of France, andthe Holy Roman emperorFrederick I,joined in the ThirdCrusade (1189-1191)torecapture Jerusalem and the HolyLand from Saladin. The crusadedid not defeat Saladin, but it didwin a partial victory, securing hisagreement to allow Christians tovisitJerusalem unhindered.■ \nTHE KURDS \ncontinued from page 1 \ndos captured Ocalan. He wasreportedly handcuffed,blind-folded,and flown to Turkeybefore dawn on February 16.Since then he has been heldon the Turkish prison islandof Imrali awaiting trial fortreason. \nEmotional Explosion \nThe daring capture caused an \nemotional explosion in theKurds shout anti-Turkish slogans during a demonstrationMiddle East that spread toin Beirut,Lebanon. To them,Ocalan is a freedom fighterother parts of the world.and a hero in the Kurdish struggle for independence.Although Ocalan is a terrorist \nand murderer to the Turks,he is a hero tomany Kurds,a people who live mainly inTurkey and in three other nations in theMiddle East.(See map on page 4.)Manysupport his efforts to establish an indepen-dent Kurdish nation. \nOcalan supporters piled into the streets ina number of Middle Eastern and Europeancities. In Athens,Greece,a Kurdish immi-grant set himself on fire to protest the cap-ture.On February 17,about 55 Kurdishimmigrants tried to break into the Israeli \nConsulate in Berlin,Germany. Those in the crowd were angryat reports that the United Statesand Israel helped Turkey cap-ture Ocalan. The consulateguards fired on the crowd, killing three demonstrators andwounding 16 others. \nIn Kurdistan,a region mainlycomprising parts of Turkey,Iraq,Iran, and Syria,Kurdsbegan a renewed surge of fight- \ning in support of Ocalan and his rebels. \nKurdistan is not a nation in the sense of acountry with established borders and a cen-tral govenment. It is a nation in the tribal orethnic sense—a mountainous region wheremore than 26 million Kurds(10 million ofthem in Turkey)share a language and cul-ture different from their neighbors.Today,Kurdistan stretches about 74,000 squaremiles through the Middle East. \nThe Kurdish minority in Turkey feels ithas been particularly discriminated against.Turkey doesn't even recognize the Kurds asa minority group.Until 1991,Turkey hadbanned use of the Kurdish language in manysettings.Kurdish is still not permitted to betaught or spoken in schools. \nNot only in Turkey, but also in Iraq andIran, the Kurds have fought for centuriesto establish an independent Kurdish \nnation—without success.Lack of success, however, has not diminished the fiercenessof Kurdish fighters, whose traditionalname is pesh merga, which means “forwardto death\"in the Kurdish language. \nKurdish Workers Party \nSince
