When Jeroboam, who was still in Egypt, heard that Solomon was dead, he returned to Israel from Egypt.  \nWhile at Shechem, the people of Israel went to talk with Rehoboam.“Your father, King Solomon, forced us to work very hard. If you will not demand that we work so hard, we will serve you faithfully.”  \nBut his reply to the people was rude and harsh. Rehoboam ignored the wise advice of his older advisors and listened to the young men with whom he grew up.  \nHe said,“I am going to make life even harder for you than my father did!”  \nThe Israelite people shouted,“We do not want anything to do with this descendant of King David!” So ten of the tribes united and asked Jeroboam to become their king, leaving Rehoboam to rule over the tribe of Judah.  \nThen Jeroboam said to himself,“If my people continue to go to Jerusalem to worship God atthe Temple, soon they will again become loyal to King Rehoboam and they will kill
