Evelyn Waughhave combined to make him one of the mostcontroversial figures in England today.Evenhis severest critics admit him to be one of the threeor four finest living writers of English prose;yet hisrecent writings have provoked an astonishing exlhibi-tion of irritation and even anger in leading intellec-tual circles in London. \nWhat is the reason? The other day I asked Mr.Desmond McCarthy, the most eminent of Britishliterary critics,if he could explain this.He is a greatadmirer of Waugh’s work. His explanation of thehighbrows'current disdain for Waugh is that themajority of British literary critics are suffering at thenioment from an intellectual snobbism about France, and are reluctant to take creative work seriously un-less it is inspired by the school of Aragon,Sartreand Eluard.“If Waugh wrote in French,”Mc-Carthy told me,“all our highbrows would acclaimhim as a second Giraudoux.” \nBut there is more to it than this. The highbrowsof Bloomsbury suffer from another form of intellec-tual snobbism—a proletarian snobbism. As Waughput it to me himself:“What they can't stand aboutBrideshead Revisited is that the hero has two loveaffairs both with women of his own class.Onc theymight forgive, but two is a sure indication to Left-wing intellectuals of reactionary crypto-fascist ideol-ogy.” \nI think there is a good deal of truth in this view. The Hemingway school of writers have cast a mantleof glamor around proletarian adultery, and this trendis so strong in the post-Potsdam world that adulteryamong the well-to-do classes is currently anathemato the Bloomsbury boys. \nWaugh,of course, does all he can to iritate andprovoke Left-wing intellectuals like Cyril Connolly,Peter Qucnnell and Brian Howard. While they havesteadily drifted to the Left in their political views, \nMr.Waugh's novcl has thc horror andswectness and delicate contagion of sophis-ticated memories. If you have nonc such ofyour ow1,you'll perhaps resent it.But somepcople, and I confcss myself one,can beenchanted and transfixcd, even corrupted—and still be grateful. \n—CHRISTOPHER MORLEY \nWaugh,largely under the influence of the Catholicfaith to which he was converted some ffteen yeaisago, has movcd consciously and dcliberately to theRight. \nNonetheless,riper intellects on thc politically pinkNew Statesman, such as Raymond Mortimer andEdward Sackville-West,regard Brideshead Revisitedas a great English classic. The cleavage about Waughdoes not follow normal party lines. It is said thatSir Osbert Sitwell, one of our rare reactionary intel-lectuals,when asked what he thought of BridesheadRevisited paused for some twenty scconds and thenrcplied:“I adore Evelyn.Do you?” \nVaugh is not one of those who finds the modernworld attractive. He seeks to live in an oasis of hisown and has adopted a formalism in his social lifewhich borders on the
