HAVE set myself to coustruct out of contemporary materials1 a full narrative of Jacobite effort at the four periods of itsactivity—in 1708,1715,1719,and 1745.These pages deal withthe first three movements:the Forty-Five is treated in anothervolume published simultaneously with the present one. \nThe scope of these pages is somewhat more restricted thanthat of a volume which I contributed over twenty years ago tothe“Scottish History from Contemporary Writers”series, entitled The Chevalier de St George and the facobite movements inbis favour,I701—1720(David Nutt:1901).That book is nolonger procurable, and an edition of it printed more recently forthe University of London is also inaccessible. \nOnly in the language and from the outlook of those who tookpart in it or watched its unfolding is it possible to recover theromantic atmosphere which irradiates the story. With no morethan a connecting word here and there I have let the actors init tell its incidents in their own way, piecing their prose so thatit reads as a consecutive narrative.I venture to think it the fullestand most vivid account of the events it records. \nTo the University Tutorial Press I am indebted for thecourteous permission to use the block illustrating the Battle ofGlenshiel. \nC.S.T. \nKinG's CoLLEGE,OLD ABERDEEN.August,1922. \nCONTENTS \nCHAP.PAGE \nLIST OF AUTHORITIESix \nI.1708.I
