O Lizard-Headed One, I call upon Ra, and your voice is silenced.” –Book of Coming Forth by Day (Spell 136) \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nPROLOGUE \nGiza Plateau, Egypt \nLate Afternoon, 1396 BCE, during the time of the Eighteenth Dynasty \nDarkness pressed in on Jadr, heavy and suffocating, his tattered linen robes fluttering in the stale breath of the tunnel. Shadows fought in the lamplight’s unsteady glow, their movements quick and furtive, like specters born of the smoke and soot that clogged the air. The acrid tang of burning animal fat stung Jadr ’s nose. His bare feet throbbed, his back ached from along day of digging, and his stomach churned with a knot of nervous tension stirred by thoughts of what lay ahead. \nA cloud of light bloomed in the darkness as the pharaoh and his entourage drew near. The hollow eye sockets of the chaos spirit embedded in the tunnel wall stared at him, Jadr ’s nerves poking at the underside of his skin as he second-guessed every decision he’d made on this fateful day. \nAs it had been since he was a boy, curiosity and desire were his undoing. One of his men was polishing the stone walls of the great temple when he saw light coming through a mortar joint. Jadr had considered ordering his men to fill it, but he was tired of digging from dusk till dawn, and if he could deliver some new treasure, the pharaoh might reward him. \nHe ordered the block removed, and from there, his decisions only got worse. \nJadr was a humble craftsman with few opportunities to rise above his low social status. The tunnel that plunged into the ground was for others to explore, perhaps even the pharaoh himself. What right did he have to lead his men into the bowels of the world? \nHe did it anyway, compelled by a feverish yearning and the delusion that he was serving both the gods and his Per-aa. But when he uncovered the chaos spirit’s bones embedded in the tunnel wall, his fantasies of gold and status were shattered. The weight of the discovery left no room for doubt. It was time to report what he had found. \nThe bronze Ankh that hung from a strand of leather around his neckstung his skin, and Jadr clutched it in his fist as he felt his future crumbling. Like the initial discovery, he should have covered the abomination up and buried it under the sands of time, but with his men watching him and the glare of the gods penetrating the earth, he didn’t dare tempt the wrath of his Per-aa. \nIn the common tongue, Jadr addressed his men. “Stay silent unless spoken to or suffer the wrath of Osiris.” \nTwo guards marched at the head of the entourage, their finely pleated white linen kilts giving way to bare chests and wide beaded collars of vibrant turquoise, carnelian, and gold. Each wore a distinctive headdress and leather sandals with intricately stitched patterns. They carried polished bronze spears and sickle-shaped swords, and their wrists and upper arms were decorated with copper armbands engraved with protective symbols and the royal insignia. The guards’ hard, obsidian eyes locked on Jadr as they halted and stepped aside, the butts of their spears clanging against the stone floor as they stood at formal attention. \nJadr ’s bowels loosened, and he heard one of his men mumbling a prayer to Horus. He thought maybe that was a good idea and silently followed suit. \nPtahmose, the pharaoh’s tjaty, stepped between the two guards, his gaze sweeping over Jadr before coming to rest on the remains of the lizard beast etched into the tunnel wall. His eyes grew wide, and when his stare shifted back to Jadr, hints of worry dragged down the man’s face. In the formal tongue of royalty that made the language Jadr used sound like the speech of oxen, Ptahmose asked,“You found this?” \nJadr felt the glare of th","cbCaic3ARep4h1c5","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaic3ARep4h1c5","pdf",3528118,229,"English","en",105,"# Prologue\n## Giza Plateau, Egypt\n## Jadr’s Discovery and the Chaos Spirit","[{\"question\":\"Who is Jadr in The Jackal’s Gate prologue, and why does he enter the tunnel?\",\"answer\":\"Jadr is a humble craftsman with few opportunities to rise.
