It follows Max Konstantin and his unit as barges crash into controlled channels filled with wreckage and obstacles, while machine-gun and mortar positions rake the crossing. Kompanie's NCO. His words were followed by a flurry of pinging noises on the hull of the small river vessel and a bunch of fiery tracers blazing just above. The sky was full of smoke, water catapulted in the air as Allied explosive ordinance rocked the water or hit other barges in spectacular, debris-scattering explosions. \nThe flat-bottomed hull rocked and jumped, as the River Thames was as if they were crossing the Channel, with waves and wind. The German 21st Division, along with several other units, was assaulting London's inner ring defenses. It was flanked by hundreds of other boats, ranging from the same Rhine River barge types to confiscated British ones. \nThe Thames itself had dissolved into a maelstrom of death, fire, and chaos as the German assault was underway, crossing the dark waters under the cover of artillery and rocket bombardment. Entire stretches of the southern embankments burned fiercely, shattered warehouses and dock cranes silhouetted against a skyline glowing red from fires raging deeper inside London. German infantry packed inside the barges crouched low as shells screamed overhead, while engineers desperately tried to guide their craft through channels cluttered with wrecks, floating debris, and half-submerged obstacles deliberately sunk by the defenders weeks earlier. \nAs the Axis forces had landed across the English Channel and made their way toward the capital, the Allies had transformed the river into a gigantic execution ground. Some of it had been prepared in 1940 during the first invasion scare (bunkers, anti-tank ditches, hidden gun positions, fortified rail embankment), but the majority of the defenses were new and very lethal. \nThe moment the first assault waves emerged from the smoke, hidden batteries of 17-pounders and American 90mm guns had opened fire from concealed positions north of the Thames, their muzzle flashes erupting from \nrailway arches, underground garages, bombed-out office buildings, and fortified embankments. German barges had vanished beneath towering columns of water and flame as direct hits tore through them, throwing men, steel, and burning fuel into the river. Machine gun nests hidden along the northern shore swept the crossing with interlocking fire, while mortars rained down in relentless patterns across the water. Several bridges still stood, but only as traps, and the Axis troops knew it. Above them, artillery shells thundered in great arcs from both sides, only to fall in scattered explo","cbCaieeUk7W5OWuH","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieeUk7W5OWuH","pdf",7105720,249,"English","en",105,"# Prologue","[{\"question\":\"What historical setting does the prologue describe?\",\"answer\":\"It describes a November 27, 1943 German assault crossing the Thames during World War II, targeting London’s inner defenses.\"},{\"question\":\"How do the defenders affect the German river crossing?\",\"answer\":\"Defenses include prepared installations and concealed batteries that unleash fire, while channels are cluttered with wrecks and sunken obstacles, turning the river into a deadly barrier.\"},{\"question\":\"Who are the central characters introduced in this prologue?\",\"answer\":\"The prologue centers on three friends: Marco Peters, Max Konstantin, and Felix Daimler, caught within the assault’s chaos.\"}]","The Isles Shall Not Fall - Prologue | PDF",1785660633,383,{"code":4,"msg":30,"data":31},"ok",{"site_id":23,"language":22,"slug":32,"title":13,"keywords":33,"description":14,"schema_data":34,"social_meta":86,"head_meta":88,"extra_data":90,"updated_unix":27},"the-isles-shall-not-fall-prologue","",{"@graph":35,"@context":85},[36,53,68],{"@type":37,"itemListElement":38},"BreadcrumbList",[39,43,47,50],{"item":40,"name":41,"@type":42,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":44,"name":45,"@type":42,"position":46},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":48,"name":12,"@type":42,"position":49},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":51,"name":13,"@type":42,"position":52},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/the-isles-shall-not-fall-prologue/116580/",4,{"url":51,"name":13,"@type":54,"author":55,"headline":13,"publisher":57,"fileFormat":60,"inLanguage":22,"description":14,"dateModified":61,"datePublished":62,"encodingFormat":60,"isAccessibleForFree":63,"interactionStatistic":64},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":56},"Person",{"url":40,"name":58,"@type":59},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-08-05","2026-08-02",true,{"@type":65,"interactionType":66,"userInteractionCount":11},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":67},"ViewAction",{"@type":69,"mainEntity":70},"FAQPage",[71,77,81],{"name":72,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":74},"What historical setting does the prologue describe?","Question",{"text":75,"@type":76},"It describes a November 27, 1943 German assault crossing the Thames during World War II, targeting London’s inner defenses.","Answer",{"name":78,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":79},"How do the defenders affect the German river crossing?",{"text":80,"@type":76},"Defenses include prepared installations and concealed batteries that unleash fire, while channels are cluttered with wrecks and sunken obstacles, turning the river into a deadly barrier.",{"name":82,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":83},"Who are the central characters introduced in this prologue?",{"text":84,"@type":76},"The prologue centers on three friends: Marco Peters, Max Konstantin, and Felix Daimler, caught within the assault’s chaos.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":51,"og:type":87,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":58,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":89,"canonical":51},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":23},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":92},[93,96,100,104,109,114,119,124,129,132,136],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":94,"slug":95},90,"story-novel",{"id":46,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":97,"show_sort_weight":98,"slug":99},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":52,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":101,"show_sort_weight":102,"slug":103},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":105,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":106,"show_sort_weight":107,"slug":108},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":110,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":111,"show_sort_weight":112,"slug":113},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":115,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":116,"show_sort_weight":117,"slug":118},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":120,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":121,"show_sort_weight":122,"slug":123},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":125,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":126,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":128},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":127,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":130,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":131},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":133,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":134,"show_sort_weight":133,"slug":135},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":137,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":138,"show_sort_weight":105,"slug":139},19,"General","general"]
